    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship, there were plenty of opportunities for me to network with several different people and see how the different asset classes work and interact together. In addition to that the people at the bank were very friendly and welcoming and always showed that they were willing to help if necessary.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues because they took time to speak to me and did not exclude me from team disucssions and activities. Eventhough the internship was 9 weeks they still made every effort to invest knowledge in you so that you would learn more and be able to add value to the team

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As a 1st year student doing an internship, I was given a lot of guidance and the basics of the industry were explained to me which allowed me to understand what was happening. In addition to that I was given a buddy that I could go and speak to if I just wanted someone to speak to or to explain something if it was a busy period for my team

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It really depended on the team and how the markets reacted. I mostly always had something to do or i could always go and shadow someone. Most interns have an ongoing prpject and then will be set mini tasks to fulfill such as writing morning commentaries or analysing certain data to gather trends. It would just depend on your team and also how many interns were on your desk

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It really varied. You will always be responsible for work that you produce especially as most of it will be used by actual members of your team in order for them to identify trends or analyse data- in that respect you are given responsibility because you often can influence your team even when you are gone and how much work they will have to do.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • For my degree they will help me a lot because I am deciding to do a finance module and so having been on the trading floor for several weeks I will understand a lot more of the concepts and be able to apply them. In terms of beyond; this is the industry I want to be in so it will help a lot beause I will already understand the basics of what happens in Markets

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was generally really nice. Depending on what floor or day it was, the trading floor had a really busy environment with a lot of activity and people talkig. People were also really open and welcoming to you coming to ask them questions which meant that the atmosphere was friendly but also had some attributes that you would expect of a trading floor

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. We would get invites to events way in advance so that we could plan our work accordingly. Human resources made sure that there was a good number of events taking place to allow us the space and opportunity to network with people at Barclays and the other interns. We also had the opportunity to rotate divisions during our internship

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a lot of focus on personal developmet as there were speaker events where you learnt about different teams and given the basics on their area and the sort of work that they did. At the beginning you also had skill workshops to guide you on speaking and communication skills

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I am coming back next year and it is nice to know that people in the firm want you to do well and ar efriendly. It is also nice to know that I wont be coming back to somewhere where I do not know anyone but rather will come in seeing familar faces and knowing generally how the bank runs and operates. This will be helpful because it means that there is not a introductory phase again when I am trying to settle in

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely- other interns were friendly and someone would try and plan a drinks evening or small dinner amogst friends made within the intern class. Overall everyone tried to help everyone and eventhough the industry is competitive peole were nice to eachother and willing to help

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Tge internship was in London, so by default the cost of living and socialising will be exoensive, especially in the Canary Wharf area. However the bank does accomodate for this and you do get paid more than enough to survive during your internship. It also depend on where you live, if you already have family living in London then it is fine.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It really depends on you as a person, if you want to go out socialising there are places in central London that you can go to that are not too far fom Canary Wharf- Near the office there are a lot of bars and a few restaurants that you can go and have dinner or drinks with after work with work colleagues or your friends.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It depended on your interest, if you like footbal join the Barclays football team
