The Role
The in depth involvement with the engines made this placement very interesting. And the safety concerns I dealt with varied from mechanical/electrical issues to performance and operation issues.
My colleagues were always willing to help me out, and were very easy to approach when I needed help.
During the initial period of getting to know the engines my supervisors were extremely helpful in simplifying tasks by running through potential strategies with me.
There was always a constant flow of safety concerns being issued from Airworthiness, so there was never a lack of work; but there were occassions where some deadlines were tight and required putting in a couple of extra hours.
There is a lot of responsibility involved, because I had to ensure the safety concerns were not applicable, and convince the Chief Engineer that my findings are suitable to suggest that there is no concern. Some concerns are obviously easier than others!
Everything from basic office skills like communication and organisation were developed; and a varied technical knowledge of gas turbine operation was gained.
The Company
There was always lots of work to be done, so everyone was very busy; but people were generally very friendly
There were some initial glitches with getting swipe card access sorted and organising access to particular programmes, but all in all I was very impressed with the placement.
I have been on several training courses varying from engine familiarisation to technical document writing.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
After applying, I received a Power Academy Scholarship with Rolls-Royce which will last for my remaining years at university. All I am required to do is a paid internship each summer and maintain a 2.1 grade average.
The Culture
During induction period, there were many opportunities to get to know the other placement students, and between us we organised events and social activities outside of work.
Monthly rent is between about £275 and £350 depending on location in Bristol. There are plenty of potential socialising activities and all are reasonably priced.
The pubs in the local area where I lived were fantastic.
The Apprentice Association at Rolls-Royce regularly hosted activities from weekly 5-a-side football to paintballing.
