The Role
Reflecting on the year I've definitely enjoyed it - it has allowed for me to make new friends, make some good contacts for future career, develop a number of skill sets and also gather up experience that could prove vital in future years.
My team went through some changes during the course of the year which led to the team size reducing but work increasing. This meant the value i could offer the team reallt increased and i felt like they really valued me being there to help. they treated me as a team member, not just an intern which reflected in some of the social events they got me involved in and also some of the costly training courses they put me on.
HP runs a mentor scheme which means you always have someone to go to if necessary. This was useful to me as my team was based all over the country, so having someone else to touch base with was good. My team were very easy to go to though, so if ever i had an issue i felt i had a lot of suport around.
This was year was more of a developing of the intern role in corporate marketing, so to begin with i wasnt all that busy. However as the year went on the responsiblities tied to the role increased and now there is a fully established job position there to keep whoever is in it busy enough.
The first couple of months were spent developing trust and relationships with my team - once this was done they willingly offloaded a lot of responsiblities on me. As i was the main memeber of the teambased at the HP UK HQ I was trusted with a lot of site specific responsibilities which helped me to develop a number of skills.
The experience I've now got will be vital - I've now successfully worked for a year within a leading global company and understand a lot of how the business works. Also a number of the training courses i went on has allowed me to develop a number of skills sets - project management, meeting deadlines, presentation skills...the list goes on. This has all added to me CV and most definitely will be useful in years to come!
The Company
It is very welcoming - which I noticed on my assessment day I had there to get the job. Its very flexible, and encourages a good social atmosphere with areas to go sit down and get a coffee with others. At the same time the HP model is to ensure you reach your goals and targets - and areas such as quiet rooms means you can grab a space to yourself if need be.
It was quite well done, first month of living in halls meant you go to know everyone before sorting houses. Then we had a organised Intern Day to Bristol and a meal at night - although this was the only thing for the year.
A lot of it is up to your team and what they are willing to invest of their budget in you - and due to the current climate of cost cutting this means very little. I think HP needs to up its game and view interns as an investment for the future and put them on courses etc so that when it comes round to the grad scheme interviews they are much better equipped to show off their skills.

They run a good grad scheme, which can then lead to many further opportunities within the company. As HP is global they also promote opportunities to work in branches abroad. All in all it is a good brand to work for and with the opportunities it offers is definitely a company i will look to start my career with.
The Culture
Yes definitely as there were around 50 of us. In the first month we lived in Reading Uni halls so we could get to know people before sorting houses. This was like freshers week all over again! We also built an intern committee covering areas such as social, charity and sports. At the end of the year we organised a HP Intern BAll which was an amazing way to top off the year!
Its in the South near London, so for those coming down from up North itll be more expensive than you are used to. However it wasn too bad, and with good money management I was able to pay off my overdraft.
Reading isn't the greatest, but fairly central so you have options such as to go out into London. I had some amazing nights out though - mainly due to it being good because of the people i was with, not the places i was at.
Yes as there was a Sport&Social club there were a number of clubs - golf, football etc which allows for you to get involve in areas outside of work. Corporate discounts on things such as cinemas and gyms in the nearby area also meant there was plenty to do come 5pm!
