The Role
Excellent experience and varied work. Would really recommend them, they train you well and give you ownership of your work.
I moved from Northern Ireland over to Ramsgate and they really helped me settle in, giving advice and recommendations when asked. Always very supportive with work as well ready to answer questions and help when needed.
My manager was excellent, she made sure I everything was alright and made sure I was coping ok with my workload. Ready to help with the university requirements as well.
At the start the work came in peaks and flows, so sometimes you would be swamped but the next week you be looking for work. But I think this was mainlty due to me being the first placement student, I don't think the next one will have the same issue.
For every rotation I was given a project and these were completely my responsibility. It was up to me to complete the work on time and to the required standard.
I received so much training in the companies systems and in excel and visio that I feel a lot more computer litereate and useful. As well as the experience gained working with so many different people from so many backgrounds, my time with Cummins has been invaluable.
The Company
The people in my department were great always up for a bit of fun but due to the extent of work, especially at month end, there were times you knew not to distract them.
As I was the first finance placement student, there were obviously a few shortfalls and issues at the start but these have been noted and will not be repeated.
Personally the company didn't try to train me up outside of what was required of my role, things that would have been useful or interesting were not always offered.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
I've been told if I applied I would be looked on very favourably.
The Culture
I was lucky as there were 7 placement students and 5 of us got on really well. But the company are recruiting more placement students this year, so there will be more people about.
It was far more expensive than Belfast but as far as I can gather pretty normal for England.
Nightlife in the local area wasn't great, a few good pubs and bars but you have to go to Canterbury (30mins away) to get decent nightlife because there are two uni's in Canterbury.
I got involved in a local hockey team and a local church and that was great getting to know people outside of work. The hockey team was great for socialising outside of work and the church provided great support. I would recommend getting involved in things outside of work.
