    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship provided useful training at the start which enabled to go into my job with a good understanding across the business areas. This was then well supported by other training and learning as I progressed, allowing for a very enjoyable experience since I was able to take on responsibility,

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every colleague who I spoke to, including those not in my team or even business area, was incredibly friendly and welcoming and always willing to go the extra mile to help me. My team were very appreciative of my work and gave my helpful feedback to help me improve, showing that they valued my development.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager gave me interesting projects which she supported me with, and advised other colleagues on how to support me as well. I ensured that we had regular meetings to make sure I was making good progress and she was always happy to do this and go over my work. She was also very supportive of other commitments whilst in the internship such as the intern events, citizenship challenge and any work I completed for other teams.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On some days I was really busy, especially when i had commitments outside of my projects to fulfill. My colleagues were very supportive and understood when I sometimes stayed late to get everything done. Sometimes I was less busy which allowed the opportunity to speak tot more people in the team and other interns.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for the completion of my two projects, both of which provided valuable insights for stakeholders in the business so I had deadlines to get these completed. I felt supported that I could always ask for help and feedback throughout my work, so the responsibility didn't bring unnecessary pressure or stress.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learned many soft skills such as interview skills and personal branding which will help me throughout my studies and my future career. I have also learned to code in one language, something which I have never done before, and this will be very helpful for my studies going forward, and hopefully I will also have the opportunity to use this skill later on in a career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great! Everyone was incredibly friendly and over lunchtime people were happy to chat which was a great way of getting to know everyone in the office. During working hours it wasn't too loud which allowed me to get on with my work well.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • On the whole, the internship was well organised. My team was accommodating and my line manager had work set up for me to do when I arrived. There were also many informative talks for interns to attend which were lead by senior colleagues. These provided a valuable insight into other business areas. I wish there had been more of these at the start of the program when the workload was lower.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have learned so much during my internship and so many different skills, all thanks to the training and the well-structured projects my line manager set. I felt that the company invested a lot of time into my development of soft skills and of business skills.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing! I would love the opportunity to come back to Barclays. In such a big organisation, there is so much to learn and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience with my team - I just wish I could stay for longer so I could contribute more to the business. The graduate scheme looks to be very well structured, allowing for a lot of choice and variety over the course of the two year program.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All of the interns were friendly and the events organised allowed us to all meet and network and subsequently meet up outside of office hours. Since I'm not from London and don't have many friends here, it was great to have a network of friends around me who were all supportive of each others' work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is an expensive city to live in, however I often managed to find lots of inexpensive social activities to do with friends and the other interns such as watching Wimbledon outside on the big screens round London, and sightseeing. Rent and transport were the highest costs for me though with careful planning I was able to afford to live happily.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was good. London is so big that I found that there was everything I could want in terms of restaurants, bars, clubs etc. It was expensive to go out in London but every now and then it was good fun!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities with other interns such as the citizenship challenge, and also activities that weren't at all related to work.

    4/5
