The Role
I enjoyed my placement a lot. Both the company as a whole, and my department were excellent. There were lots of other placement students and graduates around to meet and socialise with, along with lots of different company events and opportunities.
As I got further into my placement I was given more independence and responsibility and I felt that the work I was doing benefitted the department, the company and our customers. I was treated as another engineer rather than just a student.
I was given support and training where needed and as I progressed the level of supervision dropped and allowed me to work more independently.
I was generally kept busy, but with the nature of the business there is often a change in flow of work load across the departments. If I felt over or under worked then my manager would always be happy to help me out organising work loads.
As I progressed and was given less supervision I was responsible for my own projects. I was given the resposibility to organise testing work, communications with the customer and internal meetings.
I was able to aply theoretical knowledge learnt in lectures to real life problems. Not only this, but I have developed important soft skills needed to become a professional engineer including, organisation, communication, working with cross functional groups and also confidence.
The Company
Nothing too lively, but a fair bit of office banter was thrown around between the department.
The organisation of the placement was extremely good. I was provided with all the in house training needed, I was given a mentor for professional development and had structured quarterly reviews and plans with my manager.
The company treat the placement as a year long interview and so employ you with the hope that you will come back to them after graduation. I was given all the training I needed for the job and also supported in working towards proffesional chartership.

The company treat the placement as a year long interview and so employ you with the hope that you will come back to them after graduation. If you have a successful year then you are more than likely to be offered a graduate job if you apply.
The Culture
There were plenty of other placement students, graduates and previous graduates who were all up for organising nights out and social event days. The company's sports and social club also provided many opportunities.
I was able to live at home during my year and so my rent was very cheap! Others found the rent reasonable and close to work. Socialising costs weren't all that expensive, especially through the sports and social club.
Huddersfield is a fairly decent night out for the size of town it is and it also has the added bonus of only being a train ride away from Leeds or Manchester. Outings were often organised amongst the students/grads.
the company have a Community Envolvment team where they encourage employees to get involved in various activities from clearing canals, mock interviews in local high schools to dragon boat racing!
