The Role
I really enjoyed my placement, it gave me the opportunity to use the skills I had developed through my economics degree at university and gave me a real insight into the financial sector - particularly investment management. I was given a very good degree of support but also had the opportunity to work independently on two projects.
I was surprised at how supportive and how genuinely interested my colleagues were.
I was given lots of support and encouraged to ask lots of questions - I was also able to work independently too.
Very busy, I always had something to do whether it was working on my projects or attending meetings.
I was given a great deal of responsiblity and I was expected to take my own approach to my independent projects.
I developed a lot of interpersonal skills through meeting other interns and working with other colleagues in the company. I also developed presentation skills and excel skills.
The Company
Very friendly - hard working but a good balance between socialising and work
Very well organised - lots of intern activities, a good variation of activities
Standard Life was very committed to providing useful resources to help us develop for example we were given access to bloomberg, reuters and excel workshops
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - it would be a great company to work for
The Culture
Yes, there were lots of organised events amongst the interns and within my department. I was surprised at the high number of events.
Reasonable - I used the staff canteen everyday because the food was good and reasonably priced!
There are a good few bars and clubs very close by the office
Didn't really have much time because of the social activities but there are a number of gyms close by that I used occassionally.
