The Role
A very good working environment. I was seen as a valued member ofthe team and feel that I have met people I will stay in contact with in the future. The work load was constant and rarely a dull moment. The only down side was some tasks were a bit tedious although I was able to see the overall benefit .
I feel that the people I dealt with on a day-to-day basis were excellent - A very good team to be a part of. However due to the size of this company ~900+ employees in Huddersfield alone it was not possible to build a good friendship with everyone and as a result may have been seen to some as 'the placement student'
The level of training at Cummins is very good - There is numerous generic courses undertaken within the first month of starting work. And then as the placement progressed I was trained in specific technical aspects by my supervisors / other team members. Some bespoke training courses were also made available throughout the year.
The workload although challenging at times was not excessive. I rarely felt bored once I had been here a few months and had the opportunity to take on project responsibility of my own. Sometimes there was a need to stay late or come in early but was no more than two or three times a month.
During the second half of the placement year I feel the responsibility to take ownership of actions and ensure they were completed increased dramatically. My supervisor was comfortable letting me get on with what needed to be doing and I felt that I had taken sole responsibilty for what I commited to do.
With regards to my degree final year - I feel the placement has only benefitted generic skills such as presentation, communication etc. However looking further ahead I feel that having completed a placement will benefit me hugely in future engineering employment.
The Company
A good working atmosphere - The jokes and bantar were there although at a toned down level to what I was normally used to.
A good underlying structure however it was obvious that some gaps were present and I feel the running of the placement scheme had room for improvement.
Good opportunities for training offered all year round, however some of the larger courses were aimed at permanent employeed only. If a skill was required I was usualy able to find a colleague who was prepared to take some time to train me to a basic user level.

I believe there is a good chance placement students will be almost guaranteed a place on the graduate scheme once they have completed their degree. Sponsorship has also been mentioned but haven't received anything official as of yet.
The Culture
Excellent social scene amongst the existing employees and graduates, most of the placement students kept to themselves though. Most of the work nights out I attended were mainly permanent employees.
Cheap enough, Places could be found relatively easily for ~ £250 - £350 per month.
Pleanty of bars and the odd night club to go to, Huddersfield isn't a big place but has good rail links to Leeds & Manchester so the options are always there.
The work Health & Social club had a good variety of events held throughout the year, then there was also volunteering opportunities posted on a monthly basis. Other employees also organised smaller events that were a good way of meeting people.
