The Role
Very rewarding!
Being assigned projects/objectives which would be used by the team following the end of the internship definitely made me feel valued - especially in terms of their trust and confidence in my abilities.
My line manager was always willing to take time out of what he was doing to ensure that I was not encountering any difficulties or issues.
I was kept busy - which is a great thing - but there was always time to take a break for the occasional coffee. How busy I was ultimately depended on the tasks I was assigned.
Initially, I wasn't given a lot of responsibility. This changed after my 2nd/3rd of the internship.
I have graduated BUT the Excel and PowerPoint skills that I developed will be highly beneficial. Also, the online training I was assigned was very useful in gaining a more in-depth understanding of Compliance.
The Company
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Barclays highly emphasises its values, and these values are clearly transmitted across the entire floor. (Please note, this is strictly for my experience in Compliance and may not necessarily be the same for other areas within Barclays).
In all honesty, HR did a great job with setting up Learning Sessions with senior leaders within Compliance (e.g. Head of Compliance, Head of Whistleblowing etc.) and Networking events.
Satisfactory - personal training was run by HR for two days before my official first day of the internship.
If you are in Compliance within Barclays, you have a lot to look forward to. Barclays has invested significantly in the Compliance department! Examples include the Compliance Career Academy with Cambridge University!
The Culture
Networking events and an end of Internship event.
Cost of living is not the cheapest, but you are in the centre of London after all. It's a good place to have a drink after work with your colleagues.
This is a personal opinion, but I believe the city of London provides a much more exciting and dynamic social scene compared to Canary Wharf.
This is probably the only disappointing thing I have to say about Barclays. I would of loved to participate in some sort of organised sports team or something after work (football or squash would have been great) - if there is such an activity organised by Barclays, I was unfortunately not made aware of it.
