The Role
Very much so. Managed to get a lot of exposure to senior members of the bank and was also working with them on a frequent basis. The placement a a whole was a challenge but is rewarding at the same time. The reason for this is that by the time you leave, you will realise how much better your technical and qualitative understandings (of financial principles) are.
Quite valued. Naturally, many of the team members are very busy however, they all did their best to work with me when possible. I also felt valued due to the fact that I managed to secure work with people from other departments who were willing to give up their own personal time in order to support me.
A fair amount was given with my manager and other members of the team frequently having catch-up sessions with myself to ensure that everything's going well and in general, to assist me with my progress. All members were also willing to make time to help out meaning that I was never on my own.
Some days are naturally more busy than others. When it does get busy though. it can be quite hectic however, the tasks are managable (provided you make the effort) and if you are unable to do anything on your own, people will always be there to help. Other days are generally not to busy for the summer interns.
A lot. From day one, I was treated like a team member and the expectation of me, from the team, were very high. I assisted individuals from analysts to MDs thus, underlining how as a summer intern, you are valued. My team were also willing to spend some time to train me up with systems meaning that I could play an integral role within the team.
Skills developed a lot, especially technical skills and system abilities. The main reason for this is that the other team members were willing to train me up with many of the different systems used (despite the fact that we were only there for 9 weeks). They also provided me with useful resources therefore ensuring that I could stay up-to-date with proceedings.
The Company
Probably one of few downsides. The problem is that because the team are very driven (and resultantly, busy), it can be a struggle to spend some time with the other team members. However, when we did get to spend time, the atmosphere was very lively and the people were great to be around.
The placement was well set-up with speakers from numerous different divisions actively working with us. We were able to set-up one-to-one meetings with several of the senior directors and managing directors as well during this placement and there were also many socials. Very good overall.
Training was somewhat minimal- you are trained up for around 2 days where you build up your commercial awareness however, in terms of technical skills, you will have to do that on your own. In terms of development, it was really good. We constantly recieved feedback as to what is/is not good and in general, advice as to how to improve.
Working from home
The bank has many roles within it of a diverse nature. There is no doubt that there is a place for everyone and knowing that, it is a place that I would definitly consider working for in the future. The bank have also invested a lot into the young talent and so, you will be sure to receive good training and exposure in general.
The Culture
The environment was great and we were all very social. We would go out frequently with not only the individuals from our own division, but those from others. We also got to attend socials with graduates who were very friendly and accommodating as well as with senior members of the bank. All the interns are also based close to one-another and so we would meet frequently.
Not that expensive- there are many places close-by which were cheap and affordable. In terms of living, the costs were negligble (as I live in London anyways) however, the other interns have said that the cost is not too high anyways. We are also entitled to special discounts which makes life a lot easier.
Very good- the team would go out for dinner quite a lot but also to go for events. We would usually see each other on a weekly basis and would get the chance to go somewhere every night. Also, as we are in London, the options are very open meaning that you will never be in the position where you have nothing to do.
Many opportunities- there are many sporting clubs which you can attend (provided that you have the time) but also, extracurriculars that you can sign-up for, such as voluntary work. During our internship, we had to participate in things such a charity events, shadowing sessions etc thus, demonstrating how there are many opportunities available.
