The Role
Initially very steep learning curve, especially due to nature of FE analysis work, however overall very enjoyable and challenging work on interesting projects.
Generally very friendly and always approachable.
Received fairly regular feedback on completed work. A suitable level of support was there when required, however more support was provided by other members of the team on day to day activities.
During Whole Engine Modelling placement was always busy. Manufacturing engineering placement tended to vary more with busy and quiet spells. Overall I was rarely left with little to do.
Felt that I was given a good amount of responsibility which really boosted my confidence. The work which I was given, while not safety critical, would have had to have been completed by another member of the team if I was not doing it.
Going on placement has been the best part of my degree so far! (if it can be actually counted as part of the degree). I feel like I have used many of the technical concepts I was taught for practical applications and this has improved my understanding and confidence in my engineering capability. I have also had a lot of opportunities to develop my presentation and communication skills.
The Company
Varied depending on the placement; modelling was a little quite and manufacturing was a lot more talking and joking but the atmosphere was always friendly.
I started at a different time than all the other inters so I was left a little out of the loop regarding inductions, email lists etc. however I was able to chase this up easily myself. I never had any major problems because of starting at a different time.
Not a huge amount of additional training was offered however there was the opportunity to complete courses relevant to your placement department. Training varied a lot between the interns depending on their department. There were no generic training/ personal development courses for interns.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
Would definitely consider applying for one of the grad schemes.
The Culture
One of the nice things about this placement was there were about 40 other grads/interns around my age which made for a good the social scene.
Cheaper than uni but still more expensive than other parts of the country. Decent shared accommodation was around £325/month. Typical pint is around £3.
Few decent pubs in the area where I lieved near work (Horfeild) however needed to bus downtown for a night out.
There are loads of things to do in, and around Bristol. For me; climbing, triathlon, underwater hockey, music scene
