The Role
I enjoyed my internship because it enabled me to learn a lot, I managed to learn the full basics of Node.js and web development at JP Morgan. This is probably something I wouldn't try if I did not enter the internship. I enjoyed the colleagues I worked with they were nice and welcoming to me and helped me when I needed it. I enjoyed the responsibility management gave me, they gave me a task and let me work on it. They checked on me periodly to make sure I was ok
I felt like a member of the team because: -I was included in daily team stand ups that reported my progress. -I also attended the fortnightly team sprints(big planning meetings) -Had to go through the same work review process as everyone else. essentially I was part of the team and had to go through the same standards and rigour that every member had to go through, I was not treated any differently because I was a intern which was good.
I was given good guidance. The manage set out my goals and tasks clearly which was good when working on my project. I was able to ask a lot of questions to ensure I had no ambiguity. There was a buddy system that allowed me to talk to people on the graduate scheme to see what it was like. Also there were internship coordinators who were very approachable so If I had any problems I could talk to them overall I had a lot of options for support if I needed it which was good
I was usually very busy with always a few tasks in order. I always had something to do and sometimes was sometimes asked to make more features for my project. This meant I felt a bit stressed but it was manageable as long as I kept a good pace.
I felt like I was given a lot of responsibility. I had to research on a new technology and test if it was viable or not. This meant I may influence the decision of whether management would adopt this new technology. I felt this was a lot of responsibility.
I developed skills in node.js and javscript which was a whole new technology for me and will greatly assist me in the future. I learned how to use javascript build tools and testers which is valuable experience in any future job. I was introduced to an agile work environment, this showed me how teams collaborate in a workplace which is very helpful. Overall I feel this internship has given me a lot of valuable experience. I tried and learned new technologies, worked in a professional team and shown how things work in a workplace environment.
The Company
The atmosphere was nice workplace environment, the people were nice and would help you if you need it. There was a lot of talking and joking in-between periods of work, and casual talk in the kitchens breaked up a long day in front of the computer.
the internship was pretty well organised. I had a desk on the first day set up for me, all events dates were sent well in advanced to make sure there were no clashes. Any issues I may have I could easily contact the HR department so the whole thing was pretty well organised.
The company set up goals mid internship and end of internship goals for me to achieve. They trained me in using there training platform to make sure I was up to date on regulations. The company may offer me a graduate scheme contract if I do well enough in the internship, so they are investing a lot in me if I do well.
Doing the internship at JP Morgan gives you the opportunity to be given a graduate scheme contract at the end of the internship. If management feel you are doing well they may offer you a contract and guarantee you a job after graduation, if you satisfy the requirements of the contract. I think JP Morgan would be a good place to work because the culture is nice and the job is technically challenging.
The Culture
Yes the internship coordinators set up some events for interns to get to know each other, a few of us usually went out and socialised outside of work a few times too. my relationship with colleagues was good, our team would help each other out and everyone was easily approachable
the area had a good variety of places to go for lunch that was either pretty cheap or could be expensive, so expenses for lunch can be very manageable depending on the place you go to. there were a lot places to socialise such as coffee shops and restaurants each differently priced. overall expenses is manageable if you do not go to the expensive places every day.
There is a lot of clubs and bars in Glasgow, so there is a large variety to go to. There is a lot of variety in the clubs so if one club is not your liking then there are others. There are also nice bars to which you can chill out in as well. most of the clubs have different atmospheres so every night out can feel different which is good.
There were a few clubs in JP Morgan that you could join. Such as hill walking, basketball and golf. all were welcome to join and it allowed you to meet people outside of your usual colleagues. Sometimes the interns would organise get-togethers every so often which was a lot of fun.
