    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I've really enjoyed my internship. I've found the work interesting and learned so much during my time here about exactly how a big company produces and maintains its software. The internship program is very well organised and supported. There are many events for interns and the office itself seems to accommodate the interns well.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • While the work I am doing is almost separate from the work my team does, I feel it is valued. While interns are not expected to perform to the same level as experienced developers, they are expected to show that they are trying to better themselves and learn about the processes and the organisation. I feel that is appreciated among my colleagues.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The internship program is very well supported. I not only have a manager who I have a close relationship with, but also a buddy and a senior advisor who are always happy to answer any questions I have or deal with any concerns. During the normal working day I feel I can approach my manager(s) with any query I have about something I'm doing.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some days I found myself with a good amount of work to do and others I found that I'd hit a wall and that I was waiting for approvals or someone to email me so that I could continue.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility considering my knowledge of the systems I was using and my experience. I was given responsibility over my own work. That is to say, I chose what I did and in what order and I was in charge of demonstrating it to sponsors and pushing it to release.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I've learned here will most definitely assist me in my future career. Simply observing the processes and systems that are used in such a large company is insight into how the industry as a whole works. Skills like arranging and leading meetings are extremely useful to. From a university perspective, it was really interesting seeing how the concepts I was taught in my professional skills classes are actually applied in the real world, and what the pros and cons are of doing these things.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A very productive atmosphere. When there was something interesting to talk about, people joined in conversations and were very friendly. However, there was not so much talking that work couldn't be done and people weren't spending hours away from their desk. I got the feeling that my managers felt that as long as I was doing my work well and in an appropriate amount of time, I was able to spend as little or as much time at my desk as I chose.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. The internship program here has clearing being running for a number of years and as such as developed well into a really interesting, enjoyable experience. Interns seem to integrate well into teams and into the office as a whole.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm has clearly invested a lot of time, effort and money into the internship program. It's clear that the company plans to use the internship as a way to train up students for a potential graduate position in the office going to those interns who have performed well. This does not mean that the internship is only beneficial to the company, on the contrary, I feel I've developed a huge amount as a software engineer during my time here and learned so much about my industry.

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company seems to treat its employees well and opportunities are abundant. Were it not for other circumstances I feel I'd most likely take a graduate position here if offered.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene here. The internship program this year took on ~60 students. As such, there was always someone doing something that they invite other interns to. Everyone was friendly and happy to talk. Many of the interns were not from the local area (Glasgow) and so those applying to an internship here need not worry about not meeting people because they're moving here for the summer and don't know anyone.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Glasgow, like all cities has expensive areas and cheaper areas. The position of the office is very central so the choice of places to go for lunch is large and varied. I live in Glasgow already so there wasn't a problem with accommodation for me. I live at the edge of the west end of the city and am about a half hour walk from the office.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Night life in Glasgow is great, with a huge range of bars and clubs all over the city to suit any taste or budget.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were numerous opportunities to take part in activities outside of work. The body of interns often arranged nights out at the weekend and there was the chance to go paintballing with other interns too. Within my team there were activities like going to an escape room in Glasgow, going for dinner, going for lunch and generally going for drinks. I always felt welcome at events with my team.
