The Role
I was pleasantly surprised with my internship. I was expecting the people and the culture to be a lot different than it actually was. Senior members of staff were very welcoming and helpful and I felt at ease eventhough I was working at such a large firm. Overall, I would say that I really enjoyed myself and wished I could have stayed longer!
It was really easy to get along with my team and after a week or so of settling in, I has started to be given work that actually made an impact on their day to day procedures. So I think that with time, after colleagues have seen the quality of your work, there is nothing stopping them from coming back and giving you challenging, more significant tasks.
At times I felt as though I was left alone to find my own work and make my own contacts, but this was mainly because my manager was just too busy and didn't even sit on my floor. So even though I was slightly disappointed with the support I was given at times, I think that this actually benefitted me in terms of finding the confidence to go out and make your own contacts and build your own relationships without any help.
It varied a lot. Our month ends are the busiest times and so at that stage I was given lots of work with very tight deadlines. However, in less busier periods, people didn't have as much work to give me. However it was better to get work in the less busier periods since this meant that people had the time to explain the task and the background on it thoroughly.
Responsibility is a gradual gain at J.P. Morgan. You need to prove that you can complete tasks effectively and efficiently before people can hand you over with responsibility. And this is fair enough and exactly what happened to me. After a couple of weeks of doing a few odd tasks, people started giving me a daily/weekly task which would then be my responsibility to carry out effectively. However, being given responsibility does not mean that you're left completely alone, it is still more than ok to go and ask as many questions as you like until you fully understand what you are doing.
We had a full week of training in our first week of the internship where we learnt competency based skills as well as technical stuff about the markets and economics. This was so helpful because I literally had no clue on most things before I got there and would have not felt comfortable to go to my desk before doing this training. As well as this, we were given weekly evening classes where different department heads would come and give a presentation on what they do and how that fits into the business. This was really helpful in understanding the bigger picture and gave me and idea of where I might fit in in the future. As far as applicability to my degree, I would say that my degree is so abstract in itself that I don't think I will be using what I learnt in my studies. However, the skills I have learnt here will assist me, more importantly, in my career and life outside of studies.
The Company
It depends on the time of the month. Month ends were a lot busier and therefore people were a lot more focused. But other than that, it was pretty chilled, everyone was always up for a laugh and they were easy to get along with. It was a great balance between getting all the work done accurately and within the deadline, but also to enjoy working with the people in your team and not being shy in socializing.
Very well organized. HR made every effort to organize a lot of training events, social events and networking events with us to ensure we felt comfortable as well as educated. As well as the organization within my team goes, I don't feel as strongly about this because the project I was meant to be given for the majority of my internship never kicked off and so I was left alone to self-start my work.
J.P. Morgan are not shy in investing money in you to ensure you perform to the best of your ability. The amount of training and development sessions I went to definitely show that it took a lot of money to make that happen. Its a great place to learn about the different lines of business and how they all fit together to make the J.P. Morgan umbrella.

Very appealing. I would love to work permanently here in the future, its a great place to work with great people. Overall, its a challenging work place since it is so big, however the culture is great and the perfect fit for me. Hopefully I get offered a grad role!
The Culture
We had at least one if not 2 social events that us interns organized for ourselves. We got on really well together and made some really good friends!
It was based in central London so naturally it was an expensive place to work in and socialize in. However, for that extra money, I really think you get a better environment. Its just a whole different life to live and work in central London, in a good way!
It's London, the night life is epic. We went out as interns and I also got a few nights out with my team which was so much fun! J.P. Morgan definitely love their socializing and night life. Work hard play hard!
During our training week, we had a volunteering day. It involved us going to a school in East London and participating in their annual Careers day. We got the chance to host games and helped them with their interpersonal and presentation skills. We gave them the opportunity to ask us any questions since they would probably feel more comfortable asking us than a set of senior managers. Would have loved another one of these days but unfortunately there just wasn't the time!
