    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was interesting and I learned a lot. The experience will certainly prove useful in the future, and has been the perfect insight to the world of investment banking, the life style of an investment banker and how would it be like to work for an investment bank (and particularly, J.P. Morgan). I believe this experience is a great one to have while at university and I would strongly recommend anyone considering a career in banking to apply to a summer internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone in my team was very nice and supportive. I was given helped any time I needed some and everyone understood the initial difficulties of an intern on his first weeks. This attitude didn't change throughout the internship, since I was always helped when needed up until the end of the internship. I was lucky to be in a small time (around 20 people) since this way I met everyone working there and could actually get to know some of them quite well, which is very rare in a big team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was helped whenever I needed it, and I was always encourages to ask whenever I had a question, wanted to learn more about a project, wanted to understand the transaction I was working on or when I wasn't sure about how to do something. Everyone in the team was very helpful and welcoming, so at no time did I feel any problem when asking a question or asking for help and support.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depending on the day, but generally quite busy. I came in at 9:00 am every day, and used to stay until 12-12:30 on average. Given the cyclicality and the fact that during the summer (especially August), everything is more calm, some days not very busy. However, there were also very busy days during the internship, especially when a Request for Proposal was coming up or when a client needed something as soon as possible. At the same time, there were moments where there was very little stuff to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although this was my first internship everyone expected me to learn fast and ask less questions as the internship went by. In the beginning everything I did was checked thoroughly by someone but as the internship went by, I was given more responsibility and people were more confident my work would be correct, so didn't need to check it as thoroughly as before. Moreover, the kind of work I did evolved during the internship, where at the beginning I was given very simple tasks but at the end I was given more difficult and interesting tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • They will surely prove very useful in the future, be it in my degree or in my career. Academically, this will improve my rigorousness, hard work and attention to detail. It will also be very useful if in the future I do any finance-related course, as having worked in the financial sector previously will surely be a great advantage. In terms of my career, having experience in the Investment Banking Division of a major investment bank opens a lot of doors and helps develop very useful skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was very nice and welcoming, and I didn't have any bad experiences with any colleague at the office. There is a common misconception about investment banking that says that due to the intense level of competition and high stakes involved, everyone is very hawkish and aggressive, but that was certainly not the case in my team. While the first part was true, people were not hawkish or aggressive at all, they were always very nice and helpful.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was very well cool and well organised. The recruitment events were very helpful and interesting. I had no major issues with anything and everything was very well prepared and on time. The recruitment team offered help constantly and were very supportive throughout the internship. The Corporate Social Responsibility event was also very interesting, and I believe a very important part of the internship, since we got to help other people while doing our internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first week of the internship was all training, with very useful insight into the essentials that we needed to know to hit the ground running in our internship. The training was excellent and extremely useful. Furthermore, we had a senior speaker series, where the CEO and CFO of the company gave a speech and gave us some advice on our internship and careers. Both things were very useful and I really enjoyed them.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be very happy to be employed here in the future as I am convinced it is the perfect place to launch a career, given the experience, knowledge and technical skills that you acquire in a very short term period of time, as well as the people you meet and interact with. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the company and the other employees I interacted with were very welcoming and inspiring.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, all the interns were a very cohesive group; we met on weekends, we had a whatsapp and Facebook group only for ourselves, where we could ask for questions/help and everyone was always very happy to help. The whole intern class was very nice and cohesive during the entire internship.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so everything was quite expensive. However, in Canary Wharf (where the offices of J.P. Morgan are located in) there are also places where you can eat very well for a reasonable price, as well as places to go out for drinks. However, in general everything was quite pricey. Cost of living in Canary Wharf is reasonable but it is very far away from the rest centre of the city of London, and the commute was quite long.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were no clubs in Canary Wharf

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, the Corporate Challenge and the Corporate Social Responsibility event
