The Role
Very much enjoyed the internship, however a large part of this was due to the quality of the people I was working with than my own love for the job itself. While the team was great, very welcoming and providing me with plenty of opportunities to learn about the industry and what they were doing, I do not think that the Private Bank is where I want to start my career.
Again the team I was working with was the best part of this internship for me, they were very welcoming and gave us all a range of work, both short and longer term projects so that we could truly understand what the job entailed. We were also included in the social activities post-work throughout the 10 weeks and they really worked to get to know us.
Everyone was very friendly and ready to help, though of course you are expected to at least try to figure it out on your own first. Managers were also open for you to go to them if you were having trouble balancing your schedules or did not feel comfortable talking to the supervisor of the project you were working on directly.
Very busy, but as to be expected. Also realised that both work load and time commitment to the job varied across the interns. Arrival time was 7:30 and I left sometime after 21:30 depending on how much I had to get done that day, but felt very reasonable and I was kept busy enough during the day that I was never watching the clock, just working through the things I had to do.
I was very impressed in the amount that they were able to give to us to do and the range of opportunities we were exposed to, from assisting on client presentations and compiling performance reports and research to presenting in front of senior management and assisting on regulatory information on clients.
While the level of work was fair and days as such felt busy and productive at all times, the work itself was not necessarily as challenging as I had anticipated, only becoming stressful due to the quantity or time constraints. As such skills picked up during this internship were more to do with time management, presentation skills, team work etc.
The Company
Very open, not hierarchical, friendly. But at the same time everyone was serious about working and had a good balance between friends and colleagues.
Very well organised from the start (training week in london) to ongoing continuous education series with guest lecturers etc. and performance reviews with the managers to check in on a regular basis.
Coworkers across all areas of the business were willing to take the time to meet and train you, showing you how the specific processes worked and what it was they did. This, alond with the 1 week training in London,
International Travel
I am definitely sold on the organisation itself. The culture and environment of the the team-focused atmosphere was exactly as was sold to us at the start. There are also many benefits to working within a larger firm, namely the exposure to other business areas and possibility ofr future mobility. While I was offered a position at my current internship position, I am looking instead for alternative career paths within the same firm.
The Culture
Yes. good group of itnerns, and drinks after works with coworkers was always an option.
Geneva is extremely expensive.
Some decent areas, as always it depends more on the people you are with.
Fewer in Geneva, more in the london base.
