The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, as an introduction to the Investment Banking industry, I now feel I have the required knowledge and skills to persue a career in the industry. The best thing about it was the community feel among all the interns both inside and outside of work.
I felt welcomed by the whole team and everyone was very friendly and supportive when I first started. It was however a struggle at times trying to work with colleagues when they know you're only there for such a short period of time.
I could not have asked for better guideance or support. My manager regularly took time out of their day to take me through any projects I was unsure about and we had regular progress meetings to go over what was going well and what I needed to work on.
The balance of BAU and project work was perfect. I didn't feel I was overwhelmed and couldn't handle any of my projects and I still had time to network and see other areas of the bank. We were given the responibility to manage our own time and if we knew we had an event coming up, it was down to us to manage our workload effectively.
Its difficult only being at an internship for 10 weeks. However I feel the work I have done has genuinely been of use and will continue to be used and improved when I have left.
I feel the overall work ethic gained from doing an internship really does put you at an advantage for final year of university. The benefit of having exposure to varying levels of management means that you can see a range of management styles which can be adapted in the future. The training recieved also has put me in a good position to start my career in Investment Banking.
The Company
Overall a relaxed office environement, nothing is taken too seriously and there is the chance to meet and chat informally with members of your team both about their careers and general experiences.
The onbaording process was very smooth and well organised once I found out I was got the internship. Any questions we had prior to joining were answered promptly and the induction day was very well organsied and a great introduction to the company. The only negative is that I was never formally told what department I was going into until I recieved a call from my manager a week prior to joining.
We were given mandatory training courses and allocated buddies and senior advisors in the company which were there for us to provide additional support outside our own departments.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The graduate schemes are as good as any I have seen and future employment prospects are high. We were given all the information about the graduate scheme within our programme, however a negative is that we didn't recieve much information about other available programmes within the bank.
The Culture
As the majority of interns lived in university halls for summer, it felt like being back in first year at university! From day 1 the interns were socialising and making the most of what to do in the surrounding area.
We recieved subsidised accomadation costs which definitely helped with living costs and seeing as we were in a unviersity city outside of London, general living costs were relatively cheap.
Ae were based in a university city the nightlife any night of the week was amazing. Although there wasn't that many places to go on a Friday/Saturday night, we were there every Friday night.
Through the organised intern events and additional events put on by various groups within the company I found that there was plenty of chances to get involved in extra activities if you wanted to do so. If someone or a group of people want to organise an activity, it is definitely possible to do so.
