The Role
I worked on an interesting project which was requested by one of the traders. This allowed me to get a good understanding of my team's line of business.
Everyone in my team seemed really interested in how my project was coming along. Everyone I met was approachable and would help out with any technical issues.
My manager was very supportive, and helped put me in contact with different people across the busiess (both for my project, and to help me learn more about the different parts of the business). He always had time for me.
Most of my time was spent working on my project. The initial specification was completed relatively early on, however this gave me an opportunity to expore interesting extensions to the project.
As my project was an individual one, I was responsible for the whole code base. I was given guidence from my team and manager throughout. I was able to push my project to production systems towards the end of my internship, once it had been reviewed.
I gained good experience using Python and the Quartz ecosystem, however I don't think this would necessarily be applicable in Uni or at other businesses. I think the agile software development methods that we used and exposure to different software architectures will be more helpful.
The Company
My team were based directly on the trading floor, so the general atmosphere was really exciting and I got a good understanding of how the trading floor functions. The atmosphere in my team was good, everyone was enjoying the work they were doing.
The interview process was clear and I recieved my offer within 2 days of the assessment center. Events during the internship were also well organised. My team had a project ready for me when I arrived, so I was able to get straight into development.
We were given a week of training at the start of the internship. This involved everything from tech training (on Python and the Quartz ecosystem) to learning about the life cycle of a trade.
Company Parties/Events
Interns can be made a job at the end of the internship. We had a mid review half way through (with managers and HR.) in which we were able to discuss how things had gone so far, and any improvements that could be made.
The Culture
I was staying in Uni accomodation which meant there were always people to socialise with. There were intern drinks organised every other friday.
Rent and socialising is expensive in central London. Living further out makes it cheaper, but the cost of commuting is more. We were given a relocation grant, but this wasn't enough to cover rent/commuting.
There are loads of bars and clubs in London, and most around St Pauls have a good atmosphere after work. On the weekends we tried different areas in London to explore as much as possible.
We had a day of volunteering during the training week. There are loads of sports teams who train and play regularly with no expectation of commitment (great for trying new sports).
