    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I worked on an interesting project which was requested by one of the traders. This allowed me to get a good understanding of my team's line of business.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone in my team seemed really interested in how my project was coming along. Everyone I met was approachable and would help out with any technical issues.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very supportive, and helped put me in contact with different people across the busiess (both for my project, and to help me learn more about the different parts of the business). He always had time for me.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most of my time was spent working on my project. The initial specification was completed relatively early on, however this gave me an opportunity to expore interesting extensions to the project.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As my project was an individual one, I was responsible for the whole code base. I was given guidence from my team and manager throughout. I was able to push my project to production systems towards the end of my internship, once it had been reviewed.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained good experience using Python and the Quartz ecosystem, however I don't think this would necessarily be applicable in Uni or at other businesses. I think the agile software development methods that we used and exposure to different software architectures will be more helpful.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My team were based directly on the trading floor, so the general atmosphere was really exciting and I got a good understanding of how the trading floor functions. The atmosphere in my team was good, everyone was enjoying the work they were doing.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The interview process was clear and I recieved my offer within 2 days of the assessment center. Events during the internship were also well organised. My team had a project ready for me when I arrived, so I was able to get straight into development.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given a week of training at the start of the internship. This involved everything from tech training (on Python and the Quartz ecosystem) to learning about the life cycle of a trade.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Interns can be made a job at the end of the internship. We had a mid review half way through (with managers and HR.) in which we were able to discuss how things had gone so far, and any improvements that could be made.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was staying in Uni accomodation which meant there were always people to socialise with. There were intern drinks organised every other friday.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent and socialising is expensive in central London. Living further out makes it cheaper, but the cost of commuting is more. We were given a relocation grant, but this wasn't enough to cover rent/commuting.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are loads of bars and clubs in London, and most around St Pauls have a good atmosphere after work. On the weekends we tried different areas in London to explore as much as possible.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had a day of volunteering during the training week. There are loads of sports teams who train and play regularly with no expectation of commitment (great for trying new sports).

    4/5
