The Role
Working as a Global Markets Technology Intern at Bank of America Merrill Lynch was very enjoyable. Every day had new challenges and I was kept busy and engaged by my work and the team I worked with. There were numerous events held for the interns, including networking events, tech talks, career development and a great farewell event.
My colleagues were welcoming and great to work with. They were extremely helpful and always available to lend a hand. It was very easy to fit into the team.
Throughout the internship, I had meetings with members from my team who explained to me various things about the line of business they work in. I even got the chance to pair up with a few of them on tasks.
I had several programming tasks to complete over the course of the internship. At the start of the internship, it was fairly slow as I had to get used to the technologies used by my team. But most of the time, I kept working on my main deliverable which kept me busy. There were a few days when I had very little to do, but I used that time to learn more about the line of business I was working in.
I was given full responsibility of my main deliverable for the internship. For the other tasks, I was in the driver's seat with my colleagues helping me when I needed it.
Over the course of the internship I learned many things about software development, testing and deployment. I also gained knowledge on the line of business I was working in and also a lot about the finance industry. A lot of these skills are invaluable, especially the technical skills which will help me when I return to university.
The Company
Most days, the floor is quiet and calm. When the team is releasing software, it can get a bit hectic but it's relatively relaxed. Every month or so, the whole floor throws a pizza party for lunch which was quite fun.
On the whole, I feel that the internship was well organised for the work part. However, I did feel that some of the events did not apply to my line of business, and a few events during the intern training week did not help much with my day to day tasks.
We had numerous sessions on business etiquette, career development and compliance training. For technology interns, we had tech talks and programming workshops which were really useful.

The division and team I worked in has great opportunities for graduates and a very attractive graduate scheme.
The Culture
There were a good number of social and networking events held by the organisation.
Canary Wharf is fairly expensive.
Not aware of the nightlife in Canary Wharf but the surrounding areas has nice restaurants, pubs and bars.
We have opportunities for volunteering and sports. There was a rugby league organised for the interns.
