The Role
A very useful insight week and was key in my decision to go into banking as a career. Well structured, content was good, events well organised. All together, a very valuable experience.
All employees were willing to help and were more than happy to answer questions about the nature of the work.
The organisers of the Insight week regularly attended events and were always approachable and happy to help.
The working hours of the Insight week varied from day to day. The longest day was 8:30am-8pm. However, this involved lunch and a team building event in the evening so the balance was maintained. The individual rotations towards the end of the week were slightly too long and would perhaps be more useful if they were shorter and more frequent.
We were given very little responsibility as for an Insight week, this isn't really possible due to lack of training and experience.
The soft skills/networking training will be useful in later life in many different situations. The financial markets training will be useful in the development of my career and the rotations are useful in making decisions about which areas of Markets I wish to investigate further.
The Company
Employees were friendly and other interns had a similar outlook on the Insight week. Everyone was keen to learn and networking events provided the opportunity to get to know other interns.
The internship was very well organised. Booklets and handouts were regularly given out with details of what we would be doing, maps, information on venues, financial information etc. Accomodation was provided and was well organised and networking events were seamless with excellent food and venues.
RBS strongly invested in the interns. We were given first class training for the week and although we were not doing any actual work for the company, the training opportunities and perks of the week left us all with the strong feeling that we wanted to return.
I have gained a summer placement directly through the Spring Insight week. This was gained by completing a second assessment centre on the last day of the week. 40% of those on the Insight week successfully secured a summer placement with RBS early in this way.
The Culture
Networking events were organised so students could get to know each other. Teambuilding events were also provided. Interns were given accomodation if they lived out of the M25 and the apartments were all close together so we could get together and socialise.
For the week, accomodation in luxury apartments was paid for and all travel expenses were covered. We were also given a food allowance for each evening so the cost of living was minimal. However, in central london, drinks and eating out are expensive.
During the week, there was no time to get a taste for the nightlife. But, being in central London, the nightlife is good but expensive.
As it was a week long internship, there weren't many opportunities to get involved in things outside of work.
