The Role
It was very enjoyable; my team were very friendly and accommodating, HR provided a good by non-invasive structure to the program, and I got along well with the other interns. There were high expectations and challenges, but these were positive encouragement.
Since they were busy working it was my responsibility to get my work from them, but whenever I needed help they were very willing to assist me. Obviously as an intern you can never add a huge deal of real value to the team.
Being the summer period, a large part of my team were on holiday for chunks of the internship. When present, my manager would expect me to seek guidance from her, but whenever I asked for help she would make time for me if time permitted.
It varied massively: some days I would come in early, miss lunch and stay late to finish work, but more often than not I would not have enough to do.
Entire responsibility for my own work; it was my duty to find out what I needed to do, how to do it, ask for help along the way and deliver it. There were no "check ups" on my progress unless I requested it. Obviously as an intern you have no true responsibility that might affect the full-time employees' work.
I study engineering, so a field quite far away from finance, although the analytical skills and coding are transferable. It was definitely a great crash-course to the financial world as a whole.
The Company
Relaxed and friendly. Everyone was willing to make time to talk, but also very much work conscious.
Very well; the training week at the beginning was very useful for learning and bonding, and was well run. There were a few social events held throughout by HR, as well as talks from various teams in order to expose everyone to every aspect of the business. There was also an overall group intern project completely separate from day-to-day desk work which was challenging but not too time consuming.
I had three different forms of official training, in three different software packages, which was more than most other interns, but this was the nature of my role.

As of writing I am in the final week of the internship, and so have not yet heard about a job offer. If I do get an offer I am likely to accept as it is a great place to work.
The Culture
Yes, because of the training week all of the interns were in close contact throughout. Teams would also occasionally have drinks after work.
I lived at home, although from the other interns living costs are high. Socialising costs were also high, as always in London, but the generous salary allowed for this.
There are plenty of bars in close proximity, and obviously a huge number of clubs across London which are easy to reach.
There are some sports clubs which run at lunch times, but as interns we were generally advised we should show commitment to our work since these can take two hours out of you day. Other than that there were not many extracurricular opportunities.
