The Role
The working environment was great and I feel this has easily been the best part of my degree.
In every situation I was given the chance to has a real input and voice my thoughts.
My personal development was tracked both formally and informally, if I spoke up about a concern I may have a manager would take action to help me.
When I first began my placement I was not trained on the systems and could not perform tasks, the induction program was very loose. Once I gained an understanding of the business the onus was on me to manage my own time.
Once I had proven my competency within the first few months I was given responsibilities such as supplier relationships & cost management.
I think that this experience has been more useful than much of my degree, the skills I have gained will definitely be useful in future employment.
The Company
The atmosphere was productive but also informal. Conversation would often break out due to much of the offices being open plan.
There was little organization within the placement and this suited me, but I have raised this as an issue. It was one of my tasks to come up with a plan for future placements.
The company tracked my development and included me in any training that was happening in the office at the time.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare from home
I think that this would be good environment for a graduate to progress their career.
The Culture
Although there were not any official placement events it was usual to meet up in the free bar and/or go in town. I found no issues with the social side of the job, this could have been down to large amounts of free beer though!
There are plenty of places to rent nearby (I had a 6/7 minute walk to work) and it has all the chain shops you'd expect to find on a town high street. With a variety of shops/accommodation you can choose to live at whatever cost you prefer.
The nightlife in burton itself is not great, there are a few pubs/bar and one small club. The free bar within the workplace itself does however bump up my rating. Derby is nearby (20 mins taxi) and is suitable for a good night out.
There were a few activities to get involved in (Sports & Charity events etc) but also many colleagues live locally and organize events/nights out.
