The Role
I was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone wanting to find out more about working in the charity sector. As CRUK are a large organisation it also offers the opportunity to see what working for a large company would be like even if the charity sector wasn't where you wanted to end up working.
I was made to feel that my work was important to the work of the team. They team are friendly and approachable which meant that I felt I could ask for further support if I wanted or needed it.
My manager was great, they made sure I got what I wanted out of the placement and that I could find out about the parts of the business that interested me.
I always had something to do. At some points when the team had a lot on I had several tasks due in close succession but the entire team was busy and we were always supported.
I was responsible for my work and was liaising with outside agencies as required by my project. The work I did was important to the work of my team but was a support function.
I already had a degree when I took the placement. The role gave me the opportunity to find out more about the charity sector and the events market for fundraising as it currently stands. I have secured a job to start as soon as I finish here which I know is down to the skills and knowledge I have gained here.
The Company
CRUK has a corporate culture but a comfortable one. It is a place where work is important everyone works hard but the office is friendly and talks to each other, does tea runs etc.
The volunteer placement team do a brilliant job with the whole system. From application through interview and personal development while here. They work hard to make it a great experience, worthwhile for all involved.
The Charity provide opportunities for each intern to address any areas that they want to work on. They also provide formal CV and application training to help all the interns with their future job prospects.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
A fair number of the staff in entry level positions started as interns or grads with CRUK. There are a number of jobs listed at any one time so there are lots of possibilities to stay if that if what you want to do.
The Culture
Most teams go out regularly there are a number of sports teams in the charity. The interns organised socials as well.
It's London, socialising is never going to be cheap. Islington is not the most expensive part of town but it isn't the cheapest either!
It's London! It may not be cheap but there is always a lot going on and lots of different things to get involved with.
As a charity there are many fundraising events that you are invited to if you want to get involved. The teams also made sure that interns were invited to team nights out.
