The Role
I enjoyed my time here very much! I have learnt a lot, everything from technology to communications. People in the team are really nice. They helped me to get started including some education sessions about the jobs and the structure of the team. People always try to help you to solve your problems.
I am working on a real project which will actually deliver to the users, not some toys just for interns. This project is actually very important to the team and also has a tight timeline. I am very proud I can do this deliverable project which is the best way to learn how things work in a technology team in banking industry.
My supervisor is always there to help me and give me very useful advices both for project and working in the team. A weekly catch-up is setup so we can talk about different things every week and resolve any problem I encountered during the week. Also other people in the team help me a lot.
It depends on the stage of the project. At the beginning, I was busy settling down and learn the architecture, etc. And relatively relax for requirement gathering phase. then very busy on developing and deployment as the deadline is approaching. Overall, it is a good balance and I can easily handle the workload.
I believe, like most other short-term placements, the placement is like project-based. You are assigned a project to do and a deadline to meet. but the difference is how important the project is. In my case, I feel I have a lot of responsibilities since this project is very important for my team and other team as well.
In terms of technology, I have learnt many new things: new languages, new framework, new tools, new patterns, etc. These skills are definitely useful in the future. and more valuable things like how technology in bank works and what do people do in a technology team in a bank which can hardly learn elsewhere if I don't have this placement.
The Company
The atmosphere is like a mixture of fun and work. Most of the time, the atmosphere is relaxed and people work on their stuff. unless there is some urgent issue needed to be fixed. sometimes, there are some treats/sweets from the people just come back from their holidays. Overall the atmosphere is very good.
The placement is very well organised. There are speak series, inductions which helps me know the company better. I believe for interns there are trainings at the beginning as well. In addition, there are goals setting at the beginning of placement and self evaluations during my time here to review my performance.

The Culture
There are organized social events for intern/placement which including drinks and networking events. We have group for interns/placements as well. We organized some social events by ourselves too. I believe we are encouraged to meet people especially from other teams and divisions in order to have a better view of the industry.
I study in London as well so I don't need to move for working. On average, living in London, as you can imagine, is expensive. But I believe there are ways like sharing a flats with friends or maybe live a bit far from working location can also save a lot of money. Overall, it is a bit expensive but affordable.
There are events nearly every week including volunteering and sporting and more. I think there are also clubs and interest groups as well in the company. So I believe you get plenty of opportunities to be involved in activities outside of work. and I am sure there is one that you would like and enjoy.
