The Role
It was really good as there were more than 10 other placement students within London, and this meant that you weren't on your own. We all helped each other inside work as well as outside.
I was given a role/task that was vital to the overall project. It was critical to have my assigned applications migrated by the deadlines set at the time.
My managers were awesome - they provided me with so much advice and guidance that I was able to manage the projects assigned to me to meet deadlines and deliver.
With deadlines to meet, my day was probably about 80% busy... the other time was spent networking with people at the bank or work shadowing.
It was a 12 month placement, the first 6 months was spent understanding the organisation and meeting team members. In the last 6 months, I was given much more responsibility as the team trusted my abilities, skills, and knowledge.
I picked up a lot of project management skills during my placement year in 2007. 3 years later, I've taken a full-time role as an IT project manager.
The Company
It's a large company, loads of people around. With so many people in the office, it's never dull.
In 2007, the placement year was pretty badly organised to be honest. HOWEVER, today in 2011, I still work for the same bank and I can tell you from listening to my friends at other banks, we probably now have one of the best placement/internship/graduate schemes in the industry. This has been down to a new team of people who have put a structure around these schemes over the past couple of years. For the above reason, I've rated this at full rating.
Managers encourage you to take web based training as well as there are opportunities to take additional training if you need it. There is a team that focuses on making sure employees are developing their careers and skills.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Healthcare from home
I got a job with them, that says it all.
The Culture
Definitely. We would regularly arrange social drinks after work between other placement students.
Expensive as it's London, but this is expected.
Awesome! It's London.
Loads of voluteering opportunities that the bank gets involved in. Outings that the placement students will setup.
