The Role
The week was very enjoyable. I now have a good understanding of the different sectors within RBS which I lacked before. It means that I can now have a better idea of the area I would potentially like to work in. Although there was not much actual work that we did, the week served its purpose by providing the opportunity to experience to meet employees and experience the ethos of the company which was friendly and welcoming.
Everyone was very welcoming . I shared an apartment with another girl who was lovely and we got on really well. Although the majority of people were from mathematical/economic degrees and I was one of the few doing an Arts degree I still felt welcome and everyone was given sufficient training on the first day to understand the basics of the work that was going on.
The buddy system was really useful. It has meant that I have contacts within RBS that I can get in touch with throughout my degree if I need any advice about what I should be doing to prepare for work in Banking.
A couple of the rotations were a little too long as after a couple hours it was difficult to find questions to ask the employee that I was shadowing. I actually repeated one rotation to be in exactly the same sector which meant that I didn't necessarily gain as much information as I could have.
We were just shadowing and watching the employees working, asking questions about the work they do and the company. This was understandable as four days isn't long enough to have training for responsibility so was expected.
Before the internship I didn't really understand how the different sectors within Banking varied. I was also unsure about whether I wanted to go into banking at all. I learnt an awful lot during the week which will no doubt be helpful for an internship next summer and hopefully a headstart on a graduate programme.
The Company
Everyone that I shadowed was very friendly and informative. A couple were extremely busy with their workload but still found the time to explain what they were doing and how they have found their experience with RBS.
On the first day we had 'lessons' about finance and economics in general which was very useful to someone from an Arts degree background. The day was packed full of information. The evenings had organised socials which were good, although it may have been useful to have some more activities together during the day rather than be split off individually for the rotations every day. Although the rotations were very important, if they were slightly shorter then there would be more time for activities as a group.
As mentioned, we had a day of training. For me this was fantastic and I learnt heaps! We were taught about the different areas within RBS and about the Summer internship next year which I was then offered a place on as a result. For me, a highly worthwhile week!
I have been offered a 10 week internship with RBS next summer which I am happy to accept as the treatment I have received has been so good. The company has a good ethos and their values are focused on new employees and ensuring that they are welcomed into the company. I hope the internship will lead to a job offer!
The Culture
Although the internship was only four days it was good to meet people with similar future interests as myself. It was good to have the organised social activities in the evenings, although I was incredibly tired!
It was central London so was quite expensive but there wasn't really an opportunity to go out as the days were packed and long.
I didn't get an opportunity to experience the nightlife.
Most nights there was an organised activity.
