    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my internship with JP Morgan Edinburgh, and would love to work for the company again in the future. The 10 weeks went very quickly and I have learnt a great deal. Before starting my internship I was anxious as to what a Finance based office would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were very helpful and supportive, and I never felt like a burden on my team, despite asking many questions everyday! Even colleagues who are not part of your individual team will take time out to introduce and give an explanation of their team to you.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The Managers and Supervisors in Edinburgh could not have been more supportive. Taking time out of their busy schedules to have one to ones and meetings on a weekly basis. I was given a Senior Advisor as well as having two managers, who were very supportive during all my tasks and gave great feedback during reviews.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was given a good amount of work to complete, and If I was ever bored or needed a new task my colleagues would introduce me to what they were doing and let me help. As well as your individual team based work, you are given many tasks to work through in teams in your office or cross-location.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship, and mostly towards the final weeks once I had an understanding of the office and their procedures. However, I was never abandoned with these tasks, as my team ensured there was always someone I could ask for help if I became confused.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have greatly developed my networking skills, with many networking events and opportunity's during the internship. I have also seen a large improvement in my timekeeping and organization skills. My work specific skills such Excel and math skills have also increased and I am far more confident when working with spreadsheets and numbers.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The JP Morgan Edinburgh Office has a more relaxed atmosphere than you might expect from a Financial office. However, I feel this created a healthy and productive working environment, where you are able to learn from your colleagues and enjoy your time at work.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The only flaw with the Internship set up would be that it felt there was a lack of preparation when choosing individual teams, with some interns having to move between teams or to a different department altogether. However there were many intern specific events set up for the whole of JP Morgan that were very well ran.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • JP Morgan gave many Global Speak series where we were able to hear from Jamie Dimon and ask even have the opportunity to ask him questions. Theses were set up throughout the internship with many High Profile speakers who gave useful insight and career advice. The use of online training was also very helpful and the internal training website for JP Morgan has a huge selection of courses.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • JP Morgan is a global company and this is apparent in the employment prospects. As many teams interact with teams throughout the globe, the ability to make connections and to progress in the company are plentiful. The graduate scheme is also a focus of the internship.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As Edinburgh is an up and coming office, there is an influx of University Graduate age colleagues coming into the building which is only set to improve over the coming years. This means there are many opportunities to socialize outside and inside of work. With the office holding events for all teams as well as specific team events.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is a middle ground when it comes to living costs. Food from the canteen was a good price, however bars etc in the center of town can be expensive and very busy during the Festival time. Overall I would say Edinburgh is average to slightly above average for living costs, with the further from town you get the less expensive.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • During the festival time and summer Edinburgh has a fantastic nightlife, with many shows and bar events throughout August. The Edinburgh office, being away from the center of town only has one bar in the near proximity, but the center of town is only a short tram journey away from the office.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Our buddy organized nights out for Interns to get to know the other colleagues. There are many opportunities to join different groups and societies within the office. And we were able to participate in a Corporate responsibility day during our intern. Which involved working with charities in Glasgow.
