    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a great time. The people were fantastic, the work was (mostly) interesting and the office was a great facility (plus free lunch is always a deal-breaker!).

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Good feedback from everyone worked with. Often asked to complete useful if mundane tasks to help people during busy periods.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Able to ask any questions, but often given advice before starting new work. No other interns in the tax department once work had started, but had a 3 day intro in the tax business school to provide a brief intro to tax accountancy.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depended on the client work that the department had to do, so sometimes very busy and sometimes very bored.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Again, depended on the work available. In general reasonably responsible, completing chargeable client work most days with some exception for time spent learning and conducting internal admin.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Degree - not at all (I study physics so tax accountancy is far from relevant) Beyond - hopefully a lot. I've been offered a job as a result of the internship and hope to take it, so I think my time in the office will be very useful when I start.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly, open plan office. Sat next to someone different every day ranging from new joiner to partner. Able to ask people for work to do / help when needed regardless of job title.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The joining process was well structured. Spending the first few days in London at the tax business school was well structured also. There was a general overview of a plan for once I arrived in the office, however the actual work I was doing was very much ad-hoc, and sometimes non existent.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Three days of solid learning about the basics of tax was the most in depth learning. At the start of my time in each department rotation someone would sit down and have an hour or so briefing about what the department did and what I could potentially help with. Informally time was taken to ensure that my questions were answered.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very - I've been offered a job based on feedback received throughout the placement. People within the organisation rate the graduate scheme highly.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Other placement students - I only actually met other placement students during the time spent at the tax business school in London. We were in shared apartments and so that was sociable. Once arriving in the office I met one other intern in a different department. Colleges were very sociable. You can leave at 3pm on Friday afternoons and we often went out for drinks.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home so that was fine, but had to spend c.£6 per day on commuting. Manchester is far cheaper than London.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Manchester is a great night out. It's also pretty cheap. There are lots of bars, nightclubs and pubs everywhere.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are societies within KPMG however given the length of the internship it wasn't entirely possible to get involved in external activities (aside from going out with colleagues after work).
