The Role
Whilst being on placement is completely different to being at uni I really enjoyed my time. I enjoyed a lot responsiblity and involvement during my placement so was able to develop a lot of skills and understand the business fully. This is something I couldn't have experienced at uni and I doubt I would have been given the breadth of opportunities anywhere else.
I had strong relationships not only with people in my team but people from other businesses within 3M who I worked with. I felt the work I did was appreciated as well as making personal connections.
I had a change in manager during my placement but this was not disruptive. I always felt able to discuss things with them and the wider team so felt I had a wide support network.
Overall I had a steady stream of work but occasionally I needed to ask my manager what I should do as there was a lull, other times I experienced high work volume and had to delegate and prioritise my workload as appropriate.
From the start I was given a high level of responsiblity which I relished. This meant I was able to really get involved from the start and feel like a valuable team member.
The Student Development Programme has not only developed existing skills in a more professional way but helped me gain new skills which will be invaluable.
The Company
Everyone at 3M is nice and friendly. The office had a nice level of chat and humour. My floor would do a monthly coffee and cake morning which was a nice way of bringing everyone together.
I didn't experience and problems with my placement. The company were very flexible regarding start dates and if we put forward a case for some training or a workshop they were only too happy to accommodate this. I felt I could have a lot of input into the direction I told my role as well as I was able to suggest ideas and developments which was good.
The firm I felt invested significantly in my placement. There were numerous workshops which helped my personal development and I felt I was encouraged to be part of things above and beyond my role that would benefit me. The Student Development Programme had a lot of investment and I felt I really grew as a result of it.

I would be interested in coming back to 3M as it is such a reputable company that has real opportunities for career development and progression, not only within the UK but internationally. 3M made me feel highly valued as a placement student so as a full time employee I think I would feel even more involved.
The Culture
We tended to have lunch together and built up friendships from there. Most weekends a someone would be going out so there was a good social life avaliable.
Loughborough is really cheap in terms of rent in comparison to where I go to uni. Loughborough student union has a number of cheap nights so going out isn't too expensive either.
The student union was a good night but some of the bars/ clubs in town weren't great. There's a few nice places but the majority of nights were at the union. Given Loughborough's closeness to Nottingham we did have the odd night out there as well if you want to branch out.
During my time at 3M I took full advantage of the opportunities outside my role to get involved. There was a rounders tournament set up by my team, a couple of pub quizzes and team social events. Myself and two other placement students set up a 3M Netball Club and there was already an existing Football Club. I attended both a careers fair and a workshop at Loughborough uni on behalf of 3M which was really interesting. I also participated in Right to Read a scheme that means you spend an hour a week at school listening to children read, this was a great experience.
