The Role
I thought the internship was a great way to get to get a taste of working for a Big 4 firm, as well as experience first-hand what the graduate program at KPMG has to offer.
I felt like colleagues were very friendly and offered a lot of feedback on any work carried out. This included praise if you produced any exceptional pieces of work.
When working in the team my managers were always extremely supportive and approachable. There was also a buddy system so every intern had special guidance from a graduate working at KPMG.
This depended on the project I was working on. If you are based on a client site the day can get quite busy. However, there are also relatively slower periods when you are moving between projects.
As an intern you are treated as a graduate, so you are given real, tangible work. During my time on the internship I had the opportunity to work on proposals and presentation for clients.
The internship did demonstrate and stress the importance of effective, confident communication which can be applied to a variety of situation. However, due to the length of the internship, there wasn't much time for any in-depth training.
The Company
This varies on where you are based. At the main office the atmosphere is quite laid-back and relaxed. But you may be based on a client site where the atmosphere can vary greatly depending on the culture of the client.
Overall, the internship was set-up well. Every intern was assigned to a performance manager and a buddy. More could be done in terms of social events with other interns.
We were all given IT equipment for the duration of the internship, as well as training to use the systems. There were also various different virtual training systems available to us through the KPMG intranet.
Subsidised Canteen
If you perform well throughout the internship, then you are fast-tracked to the final stage of the graduate process. This is in the form of a partner interview and presentation in the final week of the internship.
The Culture
There are a few social events in the form of team drinks and end of the month drinks at the main office. However, there were not many social events for the interns on the vacation programme.
Being based in Canary Wharf, general living costs are high as expected. However this is something that can't really be avoided when being based in London.
There are a few different bars in Canary Wharf, however these usually get really busy after work. If you want a clubbing night out you will have to travel into Central London where there loads of options.
Due to the short nature of the internship I didn't really have enough time to fully engage with activities outside of the work place. There are sports teams and various different societies you can join if you work at KPMG permanently.
