The Role
Love it, genuinely a great place to work. Supportive environment and very welcoming team of individuals make this company a great place to work. I've experienced internships elsewhere prior to joining Grant Thornton and the work environment here is far superior to anywhere I have been previously.
Felt valued throughout. My superiors valued my contributions and ideas throughout the entire process of the internship. I went from joining the firm having a relatively minimal understanding of the operating structure and new shared enterprise model of operating, to being able to contribute ideas towards this which were taken on board and will hopefully influence future thinking.
Support and guidance throughout all levels of the organisation was a strong reoccuring factor throughout my time at Grant Thornton. Every individual I engaged with was supportive and always had time to address my questions, whether work related or more generally about career progression.
During the first week the workload is very managable, we attended national intern welcome sessions and networking events. In addition to some general training and guidance for the weeks to come. The next 6 weeks were busy, physically engaging with clients and getting stuck into audit cycles and general audit related tasks. The final week was along the lines of the first week, very chilled environment, time was allowed for presentation and final interview prep.
I was pleasantly surprised at the level of responsibility I was given. During both audits I worked on over the summer I had my own audit cycles to take ownership of and was able to directly engage with the clients that I was working with. This helped me develop my confidence and gain a hollistic overview as to what it would be like at GT as a graduate.
I feel that I will be going back to university confident and proud that I have been able to secure a position at an exciting company. The chance to apply the finance skills and general skills developed at university was a strong factor as to why I wanted to do an internship. However, being at Grant Thornton was eye opening as to the relevance of applying the skills and competencies you develop at university.
The Company
The general office environment was a great place to be. Everyone in the office has a great background and experiences to share, which is great to hear and they are more than happy to take the time to share their experiences with new starters. The office itself is a pretty cool place to be, located in the heart of the city, there's so much to do outside of work.
The company invests heavily in the internship programme. No expense was spared, we were able to travel to London for networking events, stay in hotels when away at the clients site, attend office and department engagement days. All of which made me feel incredibly welcome and valued. Personal training was made available at all stages, most of the training is on-the job (as you would expect) but the support and guidance is always made available.

Very appealing. The firm is changing the way it opperates to a Shared Enterprise model (similar to John Lewis) wherby employees are seen as the the key to the future of the firm. This is a three phased process where employees are invited to share ideas, share responsibility and then also share the reward in terms of superior profits generated by 2020. Exciting times! Looking forward to being a part of this when I come back as a graduate in September!
The Culture
Yes, all of the graduates and new starters within the firm were great at organising social gatherings and events. There's a great family vibe to the Public Sector Audit team that I worked in. The chance to attend social events and gatherings was a consistent theme and opportunity throughout my time here.
