The Role
I enjoyed my time in the company greatly. It was a good balance between developing software, meeting with people, attending events and networking.
I felt valued and respected. People I worked with were always asking for and considering my opinion. Moreover everybody were flexible enough in case the daily workflow had to be rearranged due to something not predicted happening.
A lot. Everybody was willing to help us as interns regardless of what they were doing or how busy they were. Each of us had a manager who guides you through the activities you are doing and apart from that were had mentors who would help us resolve any problems inside the team (problems that were not from a technical nature). The HR department were also very helpful and responsive.
Fairly busy at the beginning - normal working days from 9 to 5-6. We were using and agile approach to develop our software in the form of scrum. Each day we would have daily stand-ups, deciding who would do what. If at some point it felt like some people were doing more than others we could always react the restructure the workload. As part of the agile technique were also pairing on a lot of the problems, sharing the work.
We were given responsibility in the sense that we had to develop and deliver a working software but I personally never felt pressured to work more if there were things that were lagging behind. Moreover there were couple of work experience students who visited the department and we were responsible foe helping them around in the office.
In my degree - not much. I did not learn much from a technical point of view. However I saw how all the technical knowledge I accumulated at uni can be applied in a real-life work situation.
The Company
Quite relaxed and friendly. It had nothing to do with the general stereotype for hectic and stressful environment where everybody shout at each other. The hierarchy of the department was very flat so it was easy for an intern like me to speak with quite senior employees - people who are taking a Managing Director role. There was a great flow of knowledge and experience around the floor.
It was definitely well-organised. The only drawback was probably that fact that there were too many events that were more or less irrelevant for technology people but I guess this can be expected when joining a financial institution.

The Culture
Yes, I made quite a few friends. Some of the people I knew from the Spring Insight week I did a year before the internship. Moreover I was part of a team of interns, where everybody were helping each other in the learning process, given that we were all from different backgrounds - Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering
Canary Wharf, London is quite expensive - normal lunch can be anything between 10 and 15 pounds. Travelling costs were reasonable - 3-5 pounds per day. Accommodation - almost 700 per month
Yes. As interns we took part in a corporate responsibility day where we planted plants, and built wooden constructions in a nursery. Moreover there was a rugby tournament organised for all the interns.
