The Role
The BAML summer internship was a great experience and would highly recommend it. It was well-organised and fun yet a good learning opportunity with plenty of networking.
It was a great atmosphere and the people were really the highlight of the summer. Both fellow interns and bankers were interesting, dynamic, bright and motivated in a very collegial setting.
BAML really made an effort to set-up a strong support. We were each given a buddy (someone our age who started the year before), a staffer (Associate who helps us control workflow), a Development Officer (VP level who gave great advice and was always there for support), Mentor( Senior/MD) as well as HR and then the teams we were sitting with. There was certainly a plethora of choice in seeking assistance or advice.
It was usually a good mix between having enough work but not being bored. Occasionally there were ups and downs where you would have several things due at one time and others with nothing to do, but overwhelmingly you had a good amount of control over your capacity.
This is very person dependent, but I think the opportunity is very much there for those who seek it. Responsibility often comes with more challenges, but is very rewarding and brings you closer to the team. Overall, most things are done as team projects and everyone works together which is great. Especially amongst Analysts and Associates most everything is shared and people help where their skills are best placed.
For many on the internship scheme, this was the first tmie they had experienced a corporate environment and office. There are many things to learn and get used to, which wasn't a big deal as the bankers were all very friendly and helpful. Everyone will learn different things on their internship depending upon their exposure etc. but it is useful for many things going forward.
The Company
The people were wonderful and BAML is located in the City right by St. Paul's which is really important to me. There were weekly events and everyone genuinely enjoyed spending time together. As with any job, it is still a banking corporate office, but with in that context I would say second to none.
HR has an incredible number of events planned and everything was very well organised. Things always ran on time from dinners, to speakers events, to personal branding seminars. Reviews etc. were also well put together and it was always clear what we were meant to be doing when and where.
For interns, they really invest a lot into each person. We had several events weekly that were all geared towards personal development and building network and brand as well as socialising for fun. It certainly comes across as though they want you to stay and you will be here in the future.

The Culture
It's London and more specifically right in the heart of the city. Rent is certainly expensive anywhere closeby but for a single person, definitely not a problem on the banking salary. This comes with the nature of the work as most large cities with investment banking will be just the same. Great environment for your twenties.
London has many things to do, so most people have no problem finding activities to suit them in the evening or weekends. If you can't find something to do here in the evenings, you probably won't find it anywhere else. Different parts of the city are better and worse for plays, concerts, sports etc.
Most of the things done through the bank were eating and drinking related. However, there are other opportunities to get involved in London life, although from what I have heard, can be difficult if your not from here or don't have friends in London. It is a great city for parks, musicals, the opeara, art museums, athletic endeavours, close to summer venues eg. Ascot, Wembley, Lord's etc/
