The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the summer internship. I learned a lot about technology, and met some great people who I hope to maintain a relationship with. Everyday there is something new and challenging going on to keep me excited for the job.
Colleagues in my team are extremely friendly and supportive. They spend time to sit down with me and have a chat of what they do and throughout my time there they always give me instructions to make sure I can run the process smoothly.
Mentor scheme is very helpful as my mentor was very supportive and answered all the questions that I had for her. Manager seems to be quite busy sometimes but he still tries to spare some time with me every week to have a quick catch up in order to give me a better experience at the team. I am very thankful for their kindness.
There are certain tasks I have to run every single day. At the same time I was given an ongoing project to be completed during my 9 weeks here, that is enough to keep me occupied for most of my days and it is great learning opportunities for me. Also there are some urgent tasks need to be completed on some days.
I gained a first-hand experience of how the technology side of the bank. I witnessed how the systems run in the bank and learnt how to manage these systems on day to day basis. As a summer intern, I think I have gained enough exposure and really given real responsibility.
Definitely a great boost in my technology knowledge and skills which is very beneficial to my personal and professional development in the future. The learning sessions organised by the campus recruitment team of the bank was very informative and I learnt vast amount there too.
The Company
The office is very bright and new. Team members have fairly good relationship with each other and often help each other to finish the task. I feel very supported within the office.
9 weeks in total which includes 3 days of training and 8 weeks at desk. We don't have rotation but I personally think it is a good set up as we really get to know our team quite well. I am building up the knowledge to equip myself for the works need to be done in my team.
The campus recruitment team has really put a lot of effort to make this internship a great experience for interns. The first week of training is a very good foundation of the following weeks at desk. My interpersonal skills have improved significantly by networking with very senior people at the bank.

Barclays has recently changed its leadership team and waiting to appoint a new CEO for the organisation. The strategy and targets of the firm is very clear and the culture and values within the bank is very strong. I believe this acts as a great turning point for the bank and I have faith that the bank has a very promising future.
The Culture
We often have lunch together to catch up with each other. Also there are networking drinks with employees which are definitely great opportunity for us to get to know each other better.
London is not cheap but the salary and accommodation relocation fee are definitely enough to cover the living costs. Also the canteen in the bank is heavily subsidized. Eating at office is quite cheap. Drinks in Canary wharf is expensive.
Quite a lot of bars but no clubs as I am aware.
There are quite a lot of opportunities to get involved in charity events and networking drinks among interns or colleagues. Make life more interesting.
