The Role
My expectations were met and exceeded both in terms of the technology available and the quality of my fellow work colleagues. I really enjoyed my time here. Furthermore, I was impressed by the quality of the infrastructure and the personnel managing the building. Overall it was a great experience which I would definitely chose to repeat if presented with the same choice again.
I participated many meetings throughout the internship as an equal to full time employees. Sometimes I would join high profile meetings to get a sense of the important overall decisions made within the entire department. Since I was working on something that would aid all my colleagues and save them time they really appreciated my work. I got to know most of the people in my 50+ worldwide team though video conferences.
My manager was great. He adopted a more 'Silicon Valley' approach to management. As in, as longs as things got done to a high level of quality he was happy with us leaving and coming in with flexible hours. This is quite unusual for a banking environment, but it worked great for our team. We had team building activities and team lunches. Oh, and I got an awesome present at the end of the Internship!
I think there was a good balance, although because of the long working hours you tend to be less busy, but work for a longer time. Overall, it was ok in terms of time (a 9 to 6 schedule). Near deadlines or major milestones and business presentations, things got quite busy.
The business idea developed as part of the group project can have a significant impact on Client Experience. As over one third of people will experience a visual or audio disability in their lifetime, the Citi Communications platform we pitched will enable Citi to adapt to the needs of these people and make them feel like a valued and respected customer. My individual project will reduce expenses associated with the extra working hours required from developers to troubleshoot the misconfiguration of a continuous integration job and that of extra working days in the case the system configurations are lost entirely.
I come from an engineering background and this internship allowed me to use my analytical skills and provide a new perspective in the workplace. I now know how it is to work at one of the largest banks in the world and in a financial center (Canary Wharf). My level of 'business skills' certainly evolved very well and I think it is a perfect spice for a future engineering management position. I learned a lot of programming as well and that is always a good skill to have. Oh, I worked in a team managing Big Data as well. However, I wish I had more business meetings and opportunities to 'use the suit'.
The Company
The office was basically a 'cubicle farm'. The nice thing was that the cubicle walls were quite low so you could actually see your colleagues as well. The office floor was quite quiet, not like the trading floor. So it was a relaxing environment. We has some fun things such as a 'back off' and 'office minigolf'.
Quite well organized, as we had at least 3 events designed for inters per week. We had opportunities to network with other interns and keep in touch. Also, they structured it as an evaluation for the graduate position. So we had multiple reviews, reports and presentations with an HR person present for them.
This was top notch. I did not come from a business or software background and thus my 'hard skills' were not suitable for the job. However, they trained me well and I shortly became productive. We had attentions such as intern events sponsored by Citi. So they take good care of interns and invest in them expecting that they will return for the graduate role.

Should I receive a position in New York I would carefully consider it as I wish to move the US. However, I would not opt for a permanent position in the UK. The job is awesome, but it does not align with my future career interests.
The Culture
As interns we met up quite frequently in numbers for different events, however we also met on a daily basis for team lunches. We kept in touch with WhatsApp and LinkedIN. So overall I think many friendships have formed in the past summer.
Well, I worked in one of the most expensive regions of London (Canary Wharf) and also lived in a very high-end area (South Kensington). So the costs were significant. However - with my student budgeting experience I managed to spend around 200GBP per week (only).
Well I worked in London so that is enough said. Canary Wharf runs 24/7 especially for investment bankers. Therefore there was no lack of variety in the things you could do when you finished work.
Interns were organising something every Friday as small get-togethers. The HR teams prepared 3 main events at the start / mid /end of the internship. All of these amounted to quite some fun.
