About You
The combination of the people I met being extremely welcoming and friendly, the variety of social events, and the interesting work made it very enjoyable.
I was able to get involved with "real" work that the lawyers around me were doing on a daily basis, making me feel like I was making a worthwhile contribution.
We were given a great range of materials including an information booklet and timetable at the beginning, and (although not required for me) it felt like the HR team would be very approachable if we had any questions. The supervisors were also mostly very supportive and willing to give up their time to explain things, although some were just too busy.
The workshops and insights into the work of lawyers was hugely helpful and I will particularly take forward the client-minded approach needed in any future experiences.
The Company
Very well structured with workshops, social events, training and time in three different departments, plus well organised with timetables provided at the beginning of the scheme.
Great - everyone I spoke to was welcoming and approachable, I never felt like I was in the way or unwanted and everyone was keen to make a good impression and answer any questions I had. There was also a friendly and supportive atmosphere amongst the vacation scheme students.
It felt like a huge amount of effort went in to tailoring workshops and training specifically for us.
I was involved in three different departments and completed a wide range of tasks that reflected the actual work of lawyers.
The company culture was emphasised in some of the talks we were given, and that culture was confirmed by several opportunities to meet with and talk to employees at all levels of the company.
It was extremely helpful to have such a wide range of experiences both within the departments we sat in and through training and workshops.
Everything Else
As I do not live in London I ended up losing money overall through the high costs of accommodation and travel even though we were fairly well paid.
Lots of social events were organised with trainees as well as opportunities to meet partners in a more formal setting (for example with partner hosted lunches).
A good mix of food, drink, enjoyable activities such as ping pong and an opportunity to chat to people.
Through talking to trainees and looking on the intranet I found out about sporting opportunities, although it wasn't talked about much in any of the workshops.
Overall an extremely worthwhile experience.
