The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the 4-week internship working in Audit, where I gained a valuable insight into the everyday working life at KPMG. It was exciting, challenging and above all inspiring to get real hands-on experience within an excellent company.
Whether I worked with colleagues who were on the school leavers programme, managers or even senior managers, I was always treated with respect and was given challenging work. I could approach any employee in the company to ask for help and they were always happy to spend time with me.
I was given support whenever I needed it whilst still was given responsibility where I was trusted to complete work at a high standard. You are not spoon-fed by any means but were encouraged to ask questions and get involved with as much as you could.
For each intern it depended on who you were assigned to and what you were working on. For me, there was a great balance each week on various work and workload. I found myself more busy when on a job at a client site compared to the previous week where I was eased into the internship based at the office. A week where i was unassigned to any particular job meant I could experience different aspects of Audit; I got involved with an Audit preparation meeting, experienced a stock-take and helped out various people with different tasks. Overall, it was valuable to meet lots of different people and work on several jobs instead of just being assigned to one.
It really depended on what client and what task you were working on. Some of the time the work I was given was of lower importance than other times. However, these are just as important to experience and all of the time I was expected to give a high standard of work. When engaging with clients for example, it showed KPMG puts trust in their interns and does not hide you away from the action!
The work specifically may not necessarily assist your degree, but the skills developed including: communication, co-operation, persistence and becoming more productive defiantly do. Going into my final year at University after having completed the 4 week internship has provided me with the ability to be able to get up each day and work longer hours than I have done so far for my degree. It has been valuable to have learned how to work effectively under pressure.
The Company
The atmosphere was never dull. People were of course working hard but could spare the time for questions and were friendly. I noticed how positive a lot of the employees were and how each day you could expect to meet new people and sit somewhere different.
For me personally an unassigned week left it in my hands to get involved with other work. It worked perfectly for me but could imagine someone else not getting the full benefit of the time they have. The other 3 weeks went smoothly and I was always told where to be and at what time.
I felt very valued and was given various work which of course aided my development. I did not feel like the "typical" intern who was told to make coffees etc. Instead I felt there was a two-way relationship where KPMG and me, both wanted to get the most out of the experience as possible.
Very appealing. The short insight just gives you a taster of what can be expected to work at KPMG full-time. It comes with the perks and of course more prospects to develop and progress throughout the company. I was offered a job and am excited to officially the company.
The Culture
I was invited to eat out for lunch on various occasions, met other interns after work and could always chat to anyone who was in the office. One improvement could be an organised "intern lunch" of some kind because it would be nice to start the 4 weeks knowing a few of the people who are also doing an internship.
Because I was sometimes taken out for lunch during the 4 weeks, the department covered the cost which is of course very nice. The cost of socialising can vary depending on bars you go to or what you do, but overall it was not really noticeable more expensive than you would expect!
