The Role
It was a good placement. I worked on a real project with 2 other interns and a new employee headed up by two employees. There was good technical mentoring and code review.
The team leader and technical lead seemed to be happy with the work I did.
Technical mentoring was very good. The first week was a welcome week where we went through some C#/js/coffeescript/knockout.js/git tutorials and challenges to get us up to speed on the technologies used on the project we were working on.
There was always work to do, but I never felt stressed with the amount of work, enough to keep me busy, but not so much that I felt crushed.
I was working as one of four developers on an internal project that will be used by people, in other words, my work wasn't throwaway busy work.
I learnt how Softwire manages team development, using tools like Atlassian Crucible/Fisheye and JIRA along with git, C#, js, knockout.js, coffeescript. These tools are widely used in industry, so I think they have improved my employability. In addition I've improved my process of developing code, primarily through the use of code reviews and branching in source management which will come in handy on many different projects.
The Company
Relaxed, and friendly.
Extremely well done, there wasn't a point at which I felt like the company was trying to figure out what to do with me.
Employees get an hour a week to work on professional development. You are encouraged to set professional development goals that you and your line manager discuss on fortnightly status chats.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I think I performed quite well during my internship so given that the company were looking for employees I feel I would be in a good position to receive a job offer.
The Culture
People are friendly and there are many activities to join in. Mario kart at lunch is quite good fun.
Bristol can be cheap or expensive depending on where you go. The city centre where Softwire is located is so so. St. Nicholas' market is close, and has wonderful food, so lunch is always something to look forward to
Loads of stuff to do. Clubs, pubs, bars, restaurants. It's a city...
Board game nights, going to the pub, new starter drinks/food
