The Role
Thoroughly - a really nice place to work. People are genuinely lovely, easy to get along with. The project was interesting. My Colleagues were helpful - no question was a bad question, no problem too small.
I was given real work to do (not just some tiny thing to keep the interns busy), and I felt that my contributions, ideas and suggestions were valued. Also socially, very easy to fit in and get along with everyone.
Very much, Line manager always on hand to help, also other experienced developers on project willing to answer questions and give suggestions. Always someone to ask if I got stuck.
More work was given whenever I ran out. I never had too many things to do at once, very easy to balance time. Got to see several stories through development, review and testing cycles.
Pretty much exactly as much responsibility as I wanted, as a member of a team project. Was involved in sprint planning and retrospectives, expected to do work given to me (though I could of course ask for help)
A very good experience of the software development cycle in a real company, rather than university projects that tend to be smaller and self contained. Useful to make a final decision on this being the kind of job I want when I graduate.
The Company
Pretty good balance of fun to quiet so work could actually take place,
Very well organised, one week's training, then we ramped up on an existing project and started picking up work, work was assigned to people well, based on strengths, similar stories given so they could be done easily.
It was suggested I take an hour a week to work on personal devlopment, so I read Clean Code. I feel if i had an idea of what else I could do, I could have done anything I wanted.
Company Parties/Events
I was told in my last week that I didn't get the job, which is a shame.
The Culture
There were three interns, but we meshed well with the other full time employees.
I go to University in the same town, so I had to rent a flat starting July anyway. Bristol is fairly expensive though, compared to some other places. Other than rent everything is mostly reasonable
There's pubs and clubs etc, but I'm not really a nightlife person.
There's plenty of oppertunities to help out on code days for kids, etc, other charity work.
