The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship! I have felt like I have been given responsibiltiy and so felt that I have been engaged throughout. I have learnt a lot and felt like I have really contributed over the 10 weeks.
All colleagues have been so welcoming and friendly and I really felt like part of the team even though the internship was only 10 weeks. Everyone has been more than happy to answer any questions that I have had and it has been nice to be able to build up good relationships over the past few weeks. They have been so supportive and were a big part of why I enjoyed my time so much.
Everyone was very supportive from day one. They were always making sure than I was okay and knew where I was with things whilst also allowing me to take on responsibility and have ownership over the tasks that I was doing. I felt like I could go to them with any question which allowed me to learn a lot more than if this was not a possibility.
Having been given specific tasks I was always kept busy during my placement and was also given the flexibility to decide what I wanted to do on each day. This was perfect and allowed me to control where I was and what I was doing each day.
I was able to get a specific project to focus on throughout the internship which was great as I was able to see how I was contributing week-on-week. It meant that I was able to take ownership of what I was doing and I loved getting to decide how I would try and tackle the project and what I would be doing each day. I was also allowed to sit in on meetings and calls which allowed me to see a lot of the business which was great.
As it was only a 10 week placement I knew that it was important to try and learn as much as I could. By being given a specific project to carry out I was able to take ownership of it and this developed my skills hugely.
The Company
The actual office that I was based in was fairly small but had a lovely atmosphere and everyone got on well, had good chat and were also able to work well. It had a real team feeling. I also spent a lot of my time our at different branches of the bank and they all had lovely atmospheres. There is always going to be days which are a bit tense because something is going on but that was where I saw how important it is that everyone works as one unit to support each other.
It was a very well organised application process and I felt that I was kept in the loop at every point. Also getting to meet my Line Manager before I started meant I had an idea of what I was going into. The review process was simple and easy to follow and I felt that I actually had something to do whilst I was here. I felt like I just slotted in and so in that sense seemed very well organised.
All colleagues were keen to make sure that I got the most out of my expereince and were constantly checking to see what progress I had made. By giving me responsibilty and being open to any questions that I had they allowed me to develop as much as possible. I got to see a lot of the business and how the retail banking world worked and as that would be a possible route for me it was massively beneficial to see this.
I feel that because of the level of support I have recieved over the course of the internship and how friendly and welcoming everyone has been I would be very interested in future employment with the organisation. The graduate scheme that they have in place sounds great and I would be very interested in pursuing it.
The Culture
Unfortunelty I was in an area where there was only myself as an intern. I was also commuting every day through which meant it was difficult to stay through in the city for the night and I because I was not working with anyone in the city that I lived in I then did not meet any of them. However my colleagues were lovely and it was nice getting to know them better over the course of the internship.
I lived in a different city from the one that I worked in and so the cost of commuting was expensive but going for lunch etc was not expensive at all. As I said before there were not a lot/if any other students in the area that I was and so I did not spend money socialising with them in that sense.
Glasgow has a great nightlife but I know this more from past experiences rather than the actual internship itself.
There were a couple of invites to things outside of work but these were back in the city where I lived and I always got back too late to do them. The charity challenge was something that meant getting involved in stuff outside work.
