The Role
I really enjoyed my placement and believe it was incredibly well chosen and tailor fit for what I wanted. From the work I have been doing, I am confident that LBG paid close attention to what I wanted to do in the future, combined with my preferences, and selected the best possible placement.
I was included in team calls and discussions, and given the opportunity to complete tasks for colleagues in the same team working in different parts of the country. In addition to this, the work I was given was often used during team phone calls and reviews
I was given a high level of support and guidance from my supervisor when needed. I was able to ask questions in person, on the phone, or via email whenever I had them. I received sustained and informative answers to any questions I asked, and was given any help that I needed.
Due to timing, my workload tended to fluctuate depending on whether or not certain team members were on holiday, or certain tasks had imminent deadlines. I always had work to do, however, occasionally I had capacity for more work.
During my placement I was given a high level of responsibility. I was included in tasks containing sensitive information and regularly summarised my research, which was included in team calls. I was also given responsibility over finding the basis of some legal matters, and reporting to my supevisor.
The ability to conduct myself appropriately in a corporate environment is not one I realised I was learning, however, it is definitely something which has been strongly developed over the course of my internship. I would say that I have definitely been given skills for life, and have been offered future guidance by contacts I have made during my internship.
The Company
The general atmosphere in my office was friendly but fast paced. Every member of the team was incredibly busy but also very approachable. Time was always made for reviews with my supervisor, and I was able to ask questions whenever I needed to. I also found that other employees who I met, from outside my team, were friendly, incredibly insightful and helpful
The internship was very well organised in my opinion. Due care and consideration was given to my future aspirations, however, I was also encouraged to investigate a career with Lloyds. They even organised shadowing days with different areas that I was interested in and one of Lloyds client law firms.
The company invested very heavily in my training and development. Not only was I given access to hundreds of their online training resources, but I was also given advice by my team on moving into my chosen profession in the future. My monthly, weekly, and mid-term reviews with my supervisor allowed me to highlight skills which I was developing well, and talk to them about skills I wanted to develop in the future. I was then supported and given advice on how to do so.
Subsidised Canteen
The future employment prospects with the organisation are not massively appealing to me. However, if I did not wish to train as a Barrister then I would be incredibly interested. If I do, in the future, consider the Solicitor route, then I would be interested in working with the organisation.
The Culture
Aside from the opening event, there were opportunities to go for drinks, meet up and socialise with other interns. The majority of interns were staying in accommodation organised by Lloyds during the internship, and so had a greater opportunity to socialise and meet other interns, compared with those who were staying at home (myself included). However, the opportunity to work on a charity team with other interns to raise as much money as possible created an informal environment where I could socialise and get to know everyone.
The cost was very high. I worked in one of the most expensive cities in the country. Although, there were places to get significant student discounts, it was still not as cheap as other places in the country. This was offset by higher pay for those completing internships in the city, and subsidised canteens in some of the offices.
The nightlife in the area I worked in was great. It contained some of the best clubs in the country and had a lot to offer culturally. However, as I am from the city but my friends live just outside it, I did not actually spend much time enjoying the nightlife.
Lloyds has an extensive and impressive range of volunteering opportunities available to colleagues. There were a great deal of different programmes to get involved with, and our Charity Challenge sometimes allowed us to complete fundraising events outside of the workplace.
