The Role
Internship was great, had experience working with different teams on different projects, ranging from technical economic planning to putting together guides for specific tasks to be used by colleagues
I was utilised and as if I was making a meaningful contribution on numerous projects. Having learnt the ins and outs from some teams and then being used as a technical resource by other teams as they underwent the training.
My direct line manager mostly delegated management of me to lower colleagues in the food chain, and at times I fell between the cracks when getting moved between teams and managers, but as long as I was on top of making sure someone was accountable for me and I ensured they knew it, I always had someone to talk to about and issues or concerns
Work load was definitely my biggest issue. Not having my line manager pay particular attention to if I had anything to do, I frequently found myself lacking anything to be getting on with. Overall I was normally occupied, but having my line manager more involved might have ensured fewer periods of idleness
Several projects and tasks were fairly business critical, pulling data from routine MI that I owned to process, analyse, and present in a way to be used by important managers for business decisions
Certainly skills such as time management and project planning will be very useful as I undertake my dissertation this coming year - pretty much everything I learnt was either specific and interesting or broad business skills that will be useful regardless of career path.
The Company
Teams and colleagues were also helpful and informative, friendly and chatty. My office had a fairly young average age and so I found it easy to make friends and find people to talk to and go for lunch with
Similar to previous point about workload, this was perhaps the area of most concern. As more a resource to be utilised than being a part of a pre landed project or program, I could have easily fell between the cracks if I didn't ensure I remained busy myself.
Lloyds were great about ensuring I was adequately trained in anything I needed to be in order to be useful for the business. I also had fantastic opportunities to visit other teams and business areas around the office, area, and even country!
Flexi Time
National Travel
I am very interested in joining lloyds for the grad scheme, depending on which business area I am offered. Otherwise I wI'll strongly consider lloyds but might consider looking elsewhere too.
The Culture
Can't really comment on this as I was the only intern in my business area and office. Lloyds paid for accommodation in uni halls in a flay with other lloyds interns but they worked in different offices. Lloyds didn't really organise anything official.
Birmingham isn't that expensive of a place compared to London where I'm at uni, certainly on the pay we received we could live more than comfortably, especially as lloyds were paying for accommodation
Never really ventured into Birmingham, though I've been before and know the area is great for going out
Never really had many opportunities
