The Role
The work I feel I did on my placement was basic, and not something I would be interesting in doing in the future. The people however were extremely nice.
All the work I did was appreciated by my colleagues, partly as I was taking some of their tasks off their hands!
Well guided, detailed 10 week plan written out, regular phone calls to discuss work/plans.
Whilst I often had tasks to be getting on with, a lot of the time they were fairly menial and most of my time was spent waiting for people to reply to emails so I could complete the tasks
I was allowed to work autonomously on a project, with support from other colleagues, but the task I was charged with had minimal impact
Whilst they may not assist me in my degree to a great extent (other than basic computer numeracy/presentation skills), I've developed greatly in terms of working in a team in a professional environment, and my confidence has improved also.
The Company
The general atmosphere was positive- everybody got along and there was a decent amount of banter between the team. I've heard bad things about other offices but mine was really relaxed.
HR leave a lot to be desired- networking events that virtually only cater to those based in London (be aware there actually are other cities in the UK!), slow response time to emails, moving the person in charge of internships to a different role a week before we were due to start... My Line Manager was very organised and helpful, and had planned work out for me.
I don't feel they invested hugely- I think I was wasted a little in a role which required very little thought. The couple of seminars we had were fairly interesting but they died out halfway through the internship.
National Travel
Within Group Operations, very unappealing. Lloyds as a company seems a decent place to work, but it seems the chances of switching streams is limited by the inflexibility of HR - be wary of getting pigeon-holed.
The Culture
Fellow interns were good fun, relaxed. Living in shared accommodation is really good for getting to make friends, and a good social scene- more sensible than Uni!
Living in Manchester and working in Chester, commuting costs about £60 a week with a railcard. Manchester isn't the most expensive city to live, so bars and social events aren't too expensive.
In Chester- don't know. In Manchester, good- lots of variety with bars and clubs. Affleck and Browns is nice!
Bluntly, no. It seemed like everybody finished work and went home, I heard nothing of extra-curricular activities.
