The Role
Working at Citi has been an amazing experience. I have been involved with several projects which has exposed me to a range of people therefore allowing me to get a true feel of what Human Resources entails. The programme is highly structured and very well orangised and therefore I have always had things to do. Moreover, everyone is extremely welcoming and will invest a great deal of time into your personal development. I could not have asked for more in terms of enjoyment, both work related and socially related.
As a summer analyst, I was a little bit apprehensive about whether people would make you feel involved and offer guidance if needed. From day one, I have felt valued, not only by my team but everyone on my floor. People at Citi are very approachable and as mentioned above, willing to invest in you. I have made very good friends at Citi who I will definitely keep in contact with.
I think this is something Citi does extremely well. I had a direct line manager who sits in the same area and offers endless amounts of guidance. We had regular meetings to catch up on progress and raise any issues I was facing. In addition to my direct line manager, I also had further support from my team who sit around me and also more senior managers, I was assigned a buddy on arrival who has been brilliant in organising regular catch ups and making sure everyone is going ok.
Citi is a fast paced organisation and busy is in its DNA. Most days I would typically have 2-4 meetings and outside of those meetings I would be working on my projects or making calls. The first week was more of a settling in process but once the work streams have been made clear you will be busy most of the day.
Doing a summer internship at Citi will give you a good amount of responsibility. Each piece of work I was given had responsibility and meaning and it's great to think that the work you're doing is genuinely benefitting people/ the organisation. Citi believes in human development regardless of what level you're at, and therefore throwing you in the deep end and giving you challenging work to do will be a definite.
Citi is a huge place and you will be exposed to a large number of people; both junior and senior. This exposure is invaluable for developing your communication and interpersonal skills and I personally feel a lot more confident talking to people that may be a lot older or senior than I am. Organisational skills are also a skill that I have definitely improved which will be important for my studies in my final year. Arranging meetings/ attending meetings, working to deadlines and effectively planning are all things that you will learn and improve on your internship. Furthermore, I feel like I have learnt things which I can bring into my studies. I am currently reading psychology and I am taking an organisational/ industrial psychology module next year and therefore it is directly relevant. If I go decide to apply for a masters, having the summer analyst position will look favorably.
The Company
The human resources floor is fantastic. The floor has recently been refurbished to an open plan office that lets lots of light in, and this aligns with the atmosphere of the people. Even when it gets very busy, people are still talkative and friendly and therefore it is a great working environment.
Again, this is something I cannot fault with Citi. As a summer analyst, you have a chance to grab every opportunity possible and it really is down to you. It's amazing to think that people with very busy schedules are willing to make time for you and make sure you're developing new skills and making the most of your time. Citi definitely fosters a culture of growth and development!
Citi has endless amounts of opportunities. The network you can create, the work you can get involved in and the fact it is such a global organisation makes the prospect of working at in the future very appealing. Moreover, Citi strongly encourages internal mobility and there are lots of cases of people moving around within the organisation.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene. Citi organised events throughout of the internship e.g. cross networking events, charity events, drinks for networking. Outside of organised Citi events, there are many interns and therefore you have the opportunity to make friends and build relationships. There were many occasions where I went for drinks or food with other interns and I will certainly keep in touch with them,
Naturally London is expensive. The area I worked in (Canary Wharf) was fairly expensive but there are some places that you can venture out to that are not so expensive. The internship is paid and therefore this is not so much of an issue.
London has everything. No matter what music you're into or the type of nights you enjoy, London has it. It's great that there are so many different places to go out as it really does make the whole experience even better.
