The Role
The internship was excellent in that I got placed in a really exciting and up and coming part of the bank. My team was client facing and went on lots of client meetings. However I found that this meant they were extremely busy and stuggled to find me work to do at times, despite me bugging them quite consistently. I was given a project to take hold of though which allowed me to pour my time into something in a positive way, although i completed this quite quickly also.
I always received appreciation and thanks for all the work I did do. I was made to feel like I really added value to the team. Again however the busyness of my team and the fact they didnt really take the time out for me caused me to feel a little unwanted at time. I feel like they could have prepared better for my arrival and applied me in a more useful way.
Line Manager was really good at providing guidance and support. Helped me work out my career goals and seek out training that was not only relevant to a career with LBG. Was very helpful with any query I raised with him.
I spent quite a lot of time having to creatively use my time (adding extra elements to my project or formatting) and alot of time waiting for work (even after asking several times for some more). This was a little disappointing as i am the kind of person that thrives on having lots to do at once. I ended up canvassing out for work and helping an entirely different team with internal tasks to have something to do.
There were occasions were I was in charge of documents that directly affected clients and I did have some autonomy on this but largely my work did not require much responsibility. I was required to be responsible with time and plan well for my project however.
Skills employed on my project will help greatly on my dissertation - the time management and reporting elements in particular. The presentation making skills and getting used to a professional environment and building and maintaining relationships you can harness when necessary is also an invaluable skill I have gained.
The Company
Very good atmosphere in the office. Everyone is very approachable and friendly. A very nice place to work from my experience.
Could have been better organised really. I felt like my line manager, whilst very helpful wasnt really prepared for my arrival and didnt have much lined up for me to work on. It was very much a wing it scenario which left me wasting alot of time whilst they tried to find tasks for me to do.
This element was were my internship was particularly good. My LM provided lots of opportunities to shadow as well as several i set up myself. I got a wide range of experience in many different areas of my sector and really understand how each of the elements interplay. There were also frequent development webinars and my LM directed me to the interchange where there is a vast expanse of online learning and thought exercises for creating your career path etc.

Pretty good, around 70% of interns are offered a place on the grad program
The Culture
Very social atmosphere given largely by the fact that lloyds put alot of interns up in the same accommodation the fact that we were all together in the same flats meant it was easier to coordinate and we regularly met up for dinner or nights out. Also there are lots of other interns on my floor who are also available for drinks and lunches.
It was very high however the fact that our rent was being paid and the wage was pretty high meant it was manageable as long as you were senesible with your money.
Lots of cocktail bars and places to eat.
The odd thing or two came up as part of the intern and scholar charity challenge. This meant that the interns planned lots of events with all proceeds going to the banks partner charity (Children in Need).
