The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout HSBC's CRM internship program. I managed to gain a real insight about the inner workings of a bank and how different roles across all divisions work together in order to offer client solutions. There were great acttivities and workshops prepared for us as well. All in all, a great experience.
From the start of the internship by my colleagues made me feel very valued. They didn't see me as 'just another intern', instead, they were interested in what I had to say and wanted to know more about me and my plans in the future. It was very easy to develop a good rapport with others, even with the more senior members of the bank.
I was given very good guidance in terms of help and feedback from both my 'buddy' andmy line manager. They were able to go through work which I had produced for them and point out areas where my work was good and areas which I needed to develop. This gave me the ability to gague what areas I should focus on in order to improve the quality of my work.
At the begining of the internship I was not too busy as we had 2 weeks of systems and technical training. However, from about my 4th week in, I was a lot more busy, which makes the internship go by so fast! I would get into the office at about 8am and would leave around 7.30-8pm. For a banking internship, these are very good hours and would allow me to go home for dinner rather than having to stay in the office.
I was given a decent level of responsibility during my internship. I would get in touch with different offices around the world to gain and share information which was exciting. I was also allowed to participate in some client meetings. I felt as if the work which I was undertaking was of real value for my team. With this said, I would have like a little more client contact, however, it is not always that easy to bring interns to important meetings where deals are in the process of being made.
I feel as if my analytical and communications skills have vastly improved. They will allow me to better interpret trends in data and disseminate information to others.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was a good mix of fun and focus. Everybody was able to have agood time. People were very open to chat and share weekend experiences with one another. With this said, when time were busy, poeple focused on the work they had to do so that the team goal could be achieved.
The work placement is very well organised. You get an easy transition in the bank rather than being put on a desk with no prior training. You start off with an induction week where you get to understand the bank and the role you will have within it. You then get an easy entry onto your desk where you gradually get given more work and responisbility as you feel more comfortable.
I had a crash couse in corporate finance provided by a major financial eduaction company, I also got trained how to use various systems both internally and externally.

Very appealing. I hope to get offered a graduate role which will start next year.
The Culture
Yes, there was a diverse group of students from around the world. Evrybody was easy to talk to and they were people you could genuinely get on with and go on a night out with. We would often meet up for drinks after work and relax on the lawn in front of the office watching Wimbledon.
It was quit expensive, but that's what you get with London.
Nightlife was very good.
There were some opportunities, such as Dragon boat racing which was really fun.
