    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was enjoyable as a whole. The work was monotonous to begin with but once I grasped the concepts involved and started to broaden my experience in other areas it became more engaging and I liked being able to learn about an area that I did not know much about before. I have made several friends on my internship which was probably my favourite part about the experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were friendly, and able and willing to answer any queries I had relating to my work. As the weeks went on they would approach me with tasks to do which made me feel valued within the workplace.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor provided excellent guidance to me and ensured that I was well integrated into the team. She also encouraged me to branch outside of my assigned work in order to maximise my experience on my internship. My manager was often busy so it wasn't as easy to access him for support and guidance but he ensured that my supervisor was there to guide me for the duration.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the work cycles, the amount of work I got on a daily basis varied. On some days, generally at the beginning of a cycle, I would have enough work to keep me busy for several days. Following the completion of this, work would come in peaks and troughs, with certain days being busy but mostly it was not too eventful. Due to the specialist nature of working in technology it was not easy to find other areas that I could undertake work in, but I tried my best to branch out in the less busy times.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Whilst my tasks were not always exciting I could clearly see how they contributed to the overall project, which was great for motivating me to get them done. When the final product is released I will be able to see how I made a tangible contribution, which I am very happy about.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It was useful to learn about a new service line; however as I will not be applying into this area it will not be of too much use to me heading forward and perhaps it would have been preferable if it could have been accommodated for all of the interns to have a placement in their preferred department.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was positive, although most of my colleagues were busy a lot of the time so there were not too many opportunities to socialise in the office outside of lunchtime.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Once I arrived here by and large everything was set up very well - however, I was disappointed with the recruitment process prior to my arrival here. Following an event last spring I was told an interview would be arranged in the summer months - after this my contacts in the firm kept leaving, with no updates to inform me of this (this happened three times). This made arranging an interview extremely difficult and left me uncertain of my status in the recruitment process. I was also not informed of the dates of my placement very early on having acquired a place on the scheme, which meant that the cheapest accommodation had already been snapped up and the vast majority of my wages ended up being spent on a higher rent than I would have liked.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company put a lot of effort into ensuring we enjoyed the placement and got the most out of our experiences. There wasn't too much personal training but that we have been told how that process would come in the graduate scheme.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Deloitte are a very welcoming and engaging organisation and I would like to work for them. The only issue is that as I did not get to work in my preferred service line I am unaware of whether or not I would enjoy a career in this area.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good atmosphere among the interns and we were all good friends who enjoyed socialising. I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the placement

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Due to not having my final dates confirmed until late, the cost of living was higher than I would have liked. I was fortunate that the area I booked into ended up being a short walk from where I was eventually placed, but if we had been told this in advance others would have been able to reap this benefit as well. Socialising was convenient for me as I could pop home after work and then head out to where people were meeting up, although I was slightly further away from the main places where people tended to go out.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I was based a short while away from the main nightlife areas where the interns socialised - this was not too bad but meant I was generally always late!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • At Deloitte we have many societies as such whether this ranges from polo to chess. These clubs are all very inclusive and participation is encouraged during a discussion in your first week.
