The Role
The internship was a good learning experience, you are encouraged by HR to find out more about areas of the bank as well as the one you're in. There are also a lot of events where you get to meet the other interns and get to know them well.
It was a slow start due to the fact that you're not expected to know a huge amount going in. By the end of the 9 weeks on the desk you are much more familiar with the juniors on your team especially and hopefully will have contributed some useful pieces of work.
It is expected that you take responsbility for your own learning as much as other people will, this is definitely not a bad thing. There is a good feedback system in place so you can check in on what you're doing right and wrong throughout the tenure. The main thing is to learn from your mistakes and be inquisitive and curious, people respond if you are interested in what you're doing.
You can expect to get real work and work hard.
You have sole responsibility over your own project which culminates in a presentation at the end of the internship. This is a really good opportunity to bring together all of the experience you gain. In terms of day to day work, you can see the work that you do is contributing to the output of the team but people will check that you're doing things correctly so there is a good balance.
In terms of my degree the training won't be hugely relevant but the skills you obtain and the experience you have is invaluable in terms of real life skills that you will take on to whichever career you decide to pursue.
The Company
There is a hard-working atmosphere in the office, it tends to become more relaxed when the more senior people have gone home. There are plenty of opportunities to socialise with other colleagues and interns around the bank which means you'll often be bumping in to familiar faces.
The internship was very well organised, from the application and interview process down to the activitieis organised whilst you are working. Managers respect the HR team and appreciate that an important part of the experience are the events put on for interns.
The firm invested a lot into training and development. You have a week of training at the start of the internship then this is followed up by weekly sessions with lunch or in the evening to find out more about the bank. We also had a presentation skills session which was very useful. The bulk of the learning opportunity is being given real work and being proactive with taking the intiiative to understand what you are working on and how that fits in to the bigger picture.
Company Parties/Events
It is a prestigious bank to work for and the company provides a lot of perks with the job. In the building is a gym, canteen, dentist and doctor amongst other services. Whilst you cannot take full advantage of the benefits scheme whilst only here for 10 weeks you can see there are definitely perks to the job and also it is exciting working for such a big well-known organisation.
The Culture
You get to know the other interns well with the activities organised by the bank and I feel I have made life long friendships during my time here. It is a great place to meet interesting, like-minded people.
The cost of living is obviously high in London but there is no better place to spend a summer. There is so much happening in the city you are inevitably spoilt for choice with what to do with your time off.
Nightlife is not fantastic around Canary Wharf although there are plenty of good bars to go for a drink after work. You wouldn't want to stay out in Canary Wharf with so much on offer in central London!
There were plenty of activities organised by HR for the interns plus you will find that the interns will organise other things to do amoungst yourselves. You also get a pro rata holiday allowance if there is anything you really want to do that you need to take time off for.
