The Role
I really enjoyed my time at CRUK. I was working a small project, which was part of a much bigger project; The transition from the LRI to the Francis Crick Institute. It was really exciting to be part of such an amazing project that was going to make a massive difference.
My team was really lovely. Beyond that, the staff are genuinely all super friendly. There's an open plan layout, which made it so easy to approach anyone for anything.
I had weekly one on one sessions with my line manager. We caught up on work and discussed how I was finding things/ if I had any challenges etc etc. I also had two much longer one on one sessions in the second week, and half way through the placement. These were more about what I felt I was getting from the placement so far, what I thought I was missing and would like to learn to about. It was very clear that the organisation cared about my personal development.
Relatively busy. The project I was working on definitely kept me on my toes. Sometimes it required me to plan and lead meetings alone or to go along to meetings with my line manager. Moreover, I was based in the Angel office as well as the LRI in Holborn, so I was definitely on the go quite a lot. I also got involved in quite a few activities with the interns which kept me busy when I didn't have as much work.
I think that my line manger really knew my skills well and catered my responsibilities to that. She never gave me what she didn't think I couldn't handle.
I definitely learnt a lot about the charity sector. I've never worked in this sector before so I was really interested to get great insight into the day-to-day. I had access to a wealth of information! this ranged from picking the brains of staff across various departments as well as within my department for career advice. The intranet has also been a really good resource, which has lost of information about various roles and tools. There was also a number of organised info sessions, for example I want to a change management seminar. I didn't expect to have learnt so much in such a short time but its all been such valuable information that will be very useful going into my final year and applying for graduate roles.
The Company
Really relaxed! Very friendly! quite often some of the interns and I would grab coffee at our in house café. Schedule lunches at local restaurants with the team! It genuinely is such a nice atmosphere.
The whole internship was really well organised. We had weekly reviews, as well as two larger reviews in the second week and hallway through. We also had a CV skills workshop about half way through. There were organised socials for the interns at the beginning, middle and end of the internship. It was clear the volunteer team had really thought about our time here and what we could takeaway with us when we left.
They organised a CV skills workshop which was really useful. We had a look at previous applications and talked about what did and didn't work so well. We also had a one on one session with a member of the HR team. This is really useful to have had!

Very appealing! I am actually looking to apply to their graduate programme, once I graduate next summer.
The Culture
There was about 48 interns in total! We all decided to create a facebook page so we could chat and post events etc. We organised a few events amongst ourselves and it did tend to be the same group of interns that made an appearance. Consequently, I got to know them really well and definitely hope to stay in contact! Our many lunches at Bills, drinks on the roof and necessary trips to the hummingbird will be missed immensely!
I live just outside London, so my travel expenses were fully paid for which was really helpful. We were also given a daily allowance of up to £4 to claim back from our lunch expenses. The canteen inside CRUK is subsidised so it is super cheap and you can, most of the time, stay within that budget.
We did go to a few bars for drinks after work on a couple occasions. they were quite pricey but then, that is to be expected in London. Barrio North is great!
As it is a charity, there were a lot of fundraising projects going on. Generally, you do get emails about what's on and you can sign up if you're interested.
