The Role
I did enjoy the placement as it gave me a really good insight into work within the bank and the variety of careers available. Although I don't feel that the role I was in best suits me I was still able to gain a lot from the experience and it will be valuable in future career.
I felt valued by my colleagues and I was trusted with doing a range of things. At times, however, I felt like I could have been trusted with more challenging tasks and I wasn't using my full potential.
I was given weekly one to ones and these were key to structuring my learning. My line manager challenged me and always looked for more from me. He was really good in ensuring my placement was used to it's full potential and making sure I gained a lot from it.
This depended on the day. Some days I found myself with not a lot to do and had to go in search of work. However, most days I had a lot to be getting on with and my 'to do' list was more than enough for me to be getting on with.
I was not given too much responsibility on my placement but at the same time I can't see how I could have been utilised much more. The placement I was in involved a lot of work with individual clients and portfolios and so I couldn't intrude on this. A lot of what I was doing was remedial but at the same time I was gaining valuable knowledge.
I think this internship has allowed me to explore another side to myself as it didn't at all tie in with what I was doing at uni. I have however learned things about myself that I will be able to use in my life and future career.
The Company
The office was really friendly and everyone could rely on one another. Everyone made me feel like a member of the team from day one and this helped me relax into the role much faster.
I was given a really robust balanced scorecard with the expectations of me over the course of the internship. There were at times empty gaps in my day which were filled with things that needed to be done so these weren't so much planned but allowed me to learn more.
I cannot complain at all to the levels of investment in me as a person. My line manager was keen for me to see as much of the business as I could and there were webinars and calls to help get the basics of the bank. I really feel as though the bank invested in me throughout.

There is a great variety of jobs within the organisation and there is a lot of fluidity in movement between these areas. There are parts of the business I have not yet seen that do interest me and I have been referred to the graduate programme.
The Culture
There were no other interns in the same building or even city as me so I didn't get much in terms of this aspect of the job. I did go to another city during the course of my internship and met another of the interns.
The bank covered costs of accommodation which was really good so I never had to worry about this aspect of the job. Socialising was reasonably expensive but this was not done with other interns as there was none.
There was a good amount of pubs and clubs around but since there wasn't any other interns I never really did much of this. I have been here before though, with friends, and would recommend it for going out.
I did get involved in a few networking events as well as going out with people from work to play sport. I was considered to be part of the team straight away and was asked to go out when others also were.
